Are Keir Starmer’s days as Prime Minister numbered?

Good day all. Usually, when I’m commenting on the goings on in the formally “Great” Britain, it’s usually about something they’ve done to annoy me and American in general. I don’t follow British politics all that much, but I was aware that Starmer’s popularity was below that of bathing in a septic tank.

Recently, Britain held their local elections. These are for things like city and town councils, mayors, etc. They don’t have a direct effect on the overall British government the way a midterm election does in the United States. Saying that, the recent election was not good for the Labour Party and Keir Starmer. Actually, it was a disaster from what I’ve been reading. Now there is a move to boot Starmer. Here are the details from Fox News:

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer could face a leadership challenge as soon as next week after his Labour Party suffered major losses in Thursday’s local elections.

As I understand it, the Labour Party lost something like 1400 positions. Generally, these would have gone to the Conservative Party, but they are in even worse shape than the Labour Party and might just go out of business after almost 200 years. On the other hand, the Reform Party founded by Nigel Farage apparently picked up a number of seats. This has pissed off some of the Labour members of Parliament. They are worried about their own jobs.

Labour MP Catherine West told the BBC that if a Cabinet minister does not challenge Starmer by Monday, she will trigger a leadership contest herself. West said she was putting the Cabinet “on notice.”

“I’m putting people on notice — if I don’t hear by Monday morning of some leadership hopefuls, I will be asking everybody in the Parliamentary Labour Party to put a name against my name, because we need to get this ball rolling,” she told the outlet.

I’m not sure, since I don’t understand how the system works over there, but I think that might be taken as a vote of No Confidence. If that happens, and Starmer’s government loses, then I believe a new election would be held. If this is the case, the political slaughter of the Labour Party could be massive.

“But my preferred option is for the Cabinet to do a reshuffle within itself, where there’s plenty of talent and for Keir to be given a different role, which he might enjoy, perhaps an international role, and then for others to come to the fore, who can communicate the message, who are very able, so we can have minimum fuss,” she continued.

I gather my belief that if the Party forces a No Confidence vote and Starmer loses, a general election will be held is correct. Considering what I’ve been seeing in regards to the polls over there, the Labour Party would be crushed. This explains Catherine West’s preference that Starmer step down or is pushed out by the Cabinet. There would be no need for a No Confidence vote or an early general election with all the inherent political risks to the frauds and phonies currently in parliament.

West, a former junior Foreign Office minister, would need support from 20% of Labour MPs — or 81 members — to trigger a contest. She said about 10 MPs are backing her effort and expressed confidence more would join, according to the report.

Labour suffered roughly 1,400 losses across the U.K. in this week’s elections, with Reform UK making significant gains, according to GB News.

I followed the link and significant gains for the Reform party is a bit of an understatement. It looks like they picked up over 600 local seats. That’s just slightly less than half. Considering that the Reform Party was only formed seven years ago must be sending shock waves through the circles of the political elites in Britain.

Starmer accepted responsibility for the losses but resisted calls to resign, saying he was “not going to walk away and plunge the country into chaos.”

To late! Your policies have already created chaos. In fact an AI generated English girl with purple hair is far more popular than Keir Starmer.

Still, he has not explicitly ruled out a managed exit and is expected to address the situation on Monday.

Oh I think he has. There are a number of reasons why Starmer won’t step down, all of them involving his ego. He would basically be admitting that he was a complete failure as Prime Minister. I also suspect that he might just be thinking “If I’m going down, I’m taking all of them with me!”

West did not name a preferred replacement.

“I don’t have a candidate,” she said. “That’s part of the problem.”

Well, at least she knows that she has zero chance.

“But I think there are several people who would like to do it, who have been planning for months, but I’m very surprised that none of them has popped up today to say ‘I will do it’,” she added.

That could be seen as being disloyal to the PM. There is an old saying that if you strike at the king, make sure you kill the king. In this case, it’s not literal, but political and if someone were to directly challenge Starmer and fail, his or her political career is pretty much dead. Still, it’s going to be interesting to see what happens now.

***Update***

I’ve spoke with someone over there and he explained that the next potential step would be some sort of party caucus where the party decides to boot Starmer out. A No Confidence vote would be essentially the nuclear option. Such an election would probably wreck Labour and rip the guts out of the Conservatives. (People are angry over there)

Starmer was also giving a speech of some sort and according to my source, he was typical Starmer. It does look like the knives are out and being sharpened. We shall see what happens next.
