Wind farms cause Global Warming!

Please excuse me while I giggle like a little school girl. *giggle, giggle, giggle* *sniffle* Sorry about that, but when I saw this up on Slash dot, I thought it had to be a joke. Then I followed the link provided to the source.

Nope, it isn’t a joke. According to the Telegraph, a new study indicates that large wind farms do cause global warming. Here are the details:

Wind farms can cause climate change, according to new research, that shows for the first time the new technology is already pushing up temperatures. Usually at night the air closer to the ground becomes colder when the sun goes down and the earth cools.

But on huge wind farms the motion of the turbines mixes the air higher in the atmosphere that is warmer, pushing up the overall temperature.

This actually makes sense if you think about it. Take a look at citrus groves in Florida. When the temperatures drop down to freezing or lower, farmers will try and keep the air moving in order to keep their crops from freezing. So, how did they discover this?

The study, published in Nature, found a “significant warming trend” of up to 0.72C (1.37F) per decade, particularly at night-time, over wind farms relative to near-by non-wind-farm regions. Satellite data over a large area in Texas, that is now covered by four of the world’s largest wind farms, found that over a decade the local temperature went up by almost 1C as more turbines are built.

This could have long term effects on wildlife living in the immediate areas of larger wind farms.

It could also affect regional weather patterns as warmer areas affect the formation of cloud and even wind speeds.

But, wind farms are environmentally friendly! Al Gore says so!! it isn’t possible that Windmills are *gasp* a cause of global warming!!

The study read: “Despite debates regarding the possible impacts of wind farms on regional to global scale weather and climate, modelling studies agree that they can significantly affect local scale meteorology.”

Professor Steven Sherwood, co-Director of the Climate Change Research Centre at the University of New South Wales, said the research was ‘pretty solid’.

HERETIC! Burn HIM! How dare he use actual science to refute the science religion of Climate Change Global Warming! Just remember to get the required Carbon Credits from Saint Algore before we put a match to the unbeliever!

“This makes sense, since at night the ground becomes much cooler than the air just a few hundred meters above the surface, and the wind farms generate gentle turbulence near the ground that causes these to mix together, thus the ground doesn’t get quite as cool. This same strategy is commonly used by fruit growers (who fly helicopters over the orchards rather than windmills) to combat early morning frosts.”

Looks like great minds think alike. I mentioned this reasoning earlier in this post. Now there are many problems with Windmills as a power source. First, they aren’t that efficient. Second they are actually more expensive per kilowatt than all the other energy sources. Third, they also tend to turn birds into feathered confetti. ((Windmills kill birds and bats))

Another, much bigger problem is stability. In order to maintain a stable power grid, you need to know that your energy generators will provide power at a constant rate. Windmills just don’t do that. This means that the power grids have to have a backup generator of some sort running in a no load configuration. Basically the generator is running but isn’t feeding power into the grid. If voltages drop, then these generators start pushing power into the grid. Since they are already running, there is no spool up delays.

Windmills are nothing more than a feel good system. As a stable, long term, efficient, low cost means of power generation, they are a failure. Now we have found out that instead of preventing Global Warming, they help cause it. 🙂
