Chicago Teachers threaten to go on strike

Good day all. I was rather busy yesterday so I didn’t get a chance to post anything. This morning, I saw something that just screamed at me, “Make snide comments!” There was a headline on Drudge leasing to a story about the Chicago teachers union giving a 10 notice of a strike.

I don’t live in Chicago, (Thank God!) so I don’t have a dog in this hunt. However, in a general sense we all have some interest in this. It’s the usual thing of course. These overpaid incompetents pretending to be teachers won’t more pay, more benefits and less work. In doing a little research, it seems that the starting pay for a Chicago teacher with a bachelors degree is about $50K. There are also the usual gold plated benefits these union hacks get as well. According to the Illinois Policy Institute, the average salary in in the $70K range and up. Apparently, the union wanted a 30% increase with no increases in accountability or responsibilities. Gee, I would love to have a 30% pay hike. I’ve been averaging pretty much no pay hikes for the last 5 years.

Now Chicago is run by the Democrats, and is their nature, they have run the city right into the ground. Both the city and the state are wholly owned subsidiaries of the various unions and are basically bankrupt. The unions flat out don’t care. In what passes for their minds, the answer is simple. Loot the taxpayers.

Now the Mayor, Rahm Emanual may actually be considering the financial costs…for once. He rescinded a 4% raise last year and is trying to lengthen the school day to 7 hours. The union is opposed to this. The strike is their way of showing the mayor who actually runs things.

Since the advent of teachers unions about 50 years or so ago, education levels gave all but crashed in this country. The public schools are a disaster and if people can, they will send their children to a private school. The charter school system was started as a way to allow taxpayer funding of schools where the teachers are competent and the students actually learn things, like how to read and mathematics.

Frankly, let the damn union teachers go on strike. The very next day Mayor Emanual should announce that any teacher not back in the classroom the following morning is terminated permanently. Then he should see about getting their licenses revoked and hiring permanent, non-union replacements.

Of course, since this is Chicago and these are Democrats. Crushing the union won’t happen. I suspect that the strike will go for 2 days and then a full cave in by the Mayor and other hacks in Chicago, followed by a massive tax increase to pay for these utter failures teachers.

Once the tax hikes kick in, the city will find they aren’t getting the revenues anticipated do to even higher levels of unemployment due to businesses relocating or closing. This will be followed by the city government announcing that they don’t have the revenues to pay for the 30% salary increases, so they will have to lay off all the teachers recently hired, close fire stations, library’s and police stations. This will be followed by protests and then more tax hikes.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Until the taxpayers get serious, the “Blue States” and “Blue Cities” will continue in this vicious circle until complete collapse occurs. My guess is we will see the first state fail sometime in the next 3-5 years. It will be a tossup between California, Illinois, Maryland or New York which one fails so badly that they will need to be stripped of their statehood and made territories again. Of course, there is no mechanism in place for that sort of occurrence, just as there isn’t one for a state to seceded from the Union.
