Good day. This is a late breaking story and there are to many unknowns right now. However, General David Petraeus has resigned as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
The news broke a little while ago and Petraeus is citing an extramarital affair as the reason fro stepping down. I honestly have no idea about this, but a few people think the timing is a bit fishy, concerning what happened in Benghazi. Also, when was the last time any high ranking official resigned due to monkeying around on a spouse in Washington D.C? Certainly no member of congress would consider quitting over that. They usually have to be driven out of office.
Here is what is currently on Fox News:
CIA Director David Petraeus submitted his letter of resignation Friday, after admitting to an extramarital affair.
Petraeus, in a message to staff, said President Obama accepted his resignation after the two met on Thursday afternoon. Petraeus said that he asked “to be allowed” to step down.
“After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours,” Petraeus said. “This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation.”
As I said, there does seem to be something odd about this as well as the timing.
The move comes amid the unfolding controversy surrounding the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya. Scrutiny has fallen on a range of agencies including the CIA. The director had been expected to testify at hearings next week. But Petraeus, in his resignation message, cited strictly “personal reasons” surrounding his affair which until now had not been disclosed.
I don’t know if General Petraeus is going to testify now to congress. I suspect he will still be required to since he was the “Man on the spot” as it were. Below is the letter General Petraues released regarding his resignation as Director of the CIA.
Yesterday afternoon, I went to the White House and asked the President to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position as D/CIA. After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation.
As I depart Langley, I want you to know that it has been the greatest of privileges to have served with you, the officers of our Nation’s Silent Service, a work force that is truly exceptional in every regard. Indeed, you did extraordinary work on a host of critical missions during my time as director, and I am deeply grateful to you for that.
Teddy Roosevelt once observed that life’s greatest gift is the opportunity to work hard at work worth doing. I will always treasure my opportunity to have done that with you and I will always regret the circumstances that brought that work with you to an end.
Thank you for your extraordinary service to our country, and best wishes for continued success in the important endeavors that lie ahead for our country and our Agency.
With admiration and appreciation,
David H. Petraeus
This is a sad ending to a man who has done a lot for this nation.
