Alcee Hastings thinks he should have a raise

Good day all. It seems that the Democrats have sent out one of their number to demand a pay raise. The member in question? Former federal judge and current representative from Florida, Alcee Hastings.

What makes this so amusing? Alcee Hastings is a crook who should be in prison. He was impeached in the House of Representatives and convicted in the Senate and removed from his office. He also managed to avoid a criminal conviction when his bagman, (The guy collecting his bribes), wouldn’t roll over on him. Now he’s polluting an already vile place with his presence. Now he’s demanding more money. Here are the details from The Daily Caller:

Democratic Florida Rep. Alcee Hastings wants Congress to get a raise. In fact, he wants every member of Congress and their staff to get raises.

During a Rules Committee hearing Monday, Hastings said, “Members deserve to be paid, staff deserves to be paid and the cost of living here is causing serious problems for people who are not wealthy to serve in this institution.”

What a loser. Here are few more details from Roll Call:

The committee was considering the fiscal 2016 Legislative Branch appropriations bill, which sets the spending levels for Congress and legislative branch agencies. The bill includes a freeze on member pay, continuing one that has been in place since 2010.

Hastings, on the other hand, did not offer a specific amount that would constitute a raise. He said he did not file an amendment on the appropriations bill to raise member pay because he knew it would not pass. But he did say, “The least we could have done for ourselves is to give us a tax credit.”

Hastings argued that a pay increase would help diversify the ranks of Congress. Hastings, the second poorest member of Congress according to CQ Roll Call’s most recent Wealth of Congress ranking, argued that failing to increase pay for members of Congress will render it an “elite institution” for wealthy individuals to serve in the next 10 years to 20 years.

Hastings is broke because he’s a crook and has massive legal bills he has to pay off. As to Congress becoming an elitist institution? I wonder if he was smoking crack with the late unlamented Mayor Marion Barry? Now, I have a general reaction to Hasting’s lament that he is woefully underpaid as a member of Congress.

Not only does Alcee Hasting and Congress not deserve a pay raise, they should have a significant pay cut. As for Hastings? If you can’t make it criminal, go find another job. With your record background, I doubt you will have any problems finding something in the food service industry.
