The Stupid Criminal of the week #50 is…

Matthew Riggins! Let’s hear it for Mr. Riggins, a burglar who gave his all, just not quite the way he had intended to.

Stupid Criminal

It seems that when Mr. Riggins and his accomplice were spotted trying to burgle someone’s home, they did what criminals always do. Run away and feed some alligators. Umm, What? Feed some alligators you say? Here are the details on yet another criminal mastermind’s interesting end from WFTV:

A burglary suspect was able to escape deputies, but not a hungry 11-foot alligator, Brevard County authorities said. Matthew Riggins’ body was identified on Monday after he was found in a Barefoot Bay lake on Nov. 23. Investigators said Riggins drowned as a result of an alligator attack while running from deputies.

Dispatch got a call from a resident that said they saw two males in all black walking behind residences,” said Maj. Tod Goodyear of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. Riggins and his alleged accomplice ran from deputies into a wooded area and were never found.

Hmm, does that mean that there were two criminals on the menu for the local alligator population?

Deputies later learned Riggins had called his girlfriend while he was being chased.

Oh that must have been an interesting call. I can see it now. “I’m being chased by the police, but I think I’ve lost the….*Chomp* *Splash* *Gulp* *Burp*

Riggins was reported missing to the Palm Bay Police Department the next day when he didn’t return home.

During the recovery of his body, which was spotted just north of Ocean Avenue Way, dive teams encountered an 11-foot alligator near the body. Florida Fish and Wildlife caught the animal and had it euthanized. Reports said that the, “forensic examination of the alligator located remains consistent with the injuries to Riggins inside the alligator’s stomach.”

So at that point, we had a belief that he was probably attacked by the alligator when he was trying to get away from police,” said Goodyear.

Oh, it turns out that the Late Mr. Riggins accomplice wasn’t on the menu after all.

Deputies said they’ve located Riggins’ alleged accomplice, who is refusing to cooperate with the investigation.

Gee, I wonder why he won’t cooperate? It may have something to do with a death occurring during a crime I suspect, but I would think a prosecutor would have a hard time getting a conviction. Pity they had to kill the alligator who saved the taxpayers a fortune in legal and incarceration costs.
