Good day all. Yesterday, Donald Trump released a list of 11 people he would consider submitting to the Senate for the United States Supreme Court. The list has many Never Trump!(ers) heads detonating.
The people on the list, from what I’ve been reading, tend towards the late Justice Scalia’s interpretation of the Constitution, basically a constructionists view. I am totally unqualified to comment on the choices listed, but Fox News has a few details on them.
Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, on Wednesday released a list of 11 potential Supreme Court nominees he would appoint if elected president, including to fill the vacancy left by Justice Antonin Scalia.
The list is meant to reassure conservatives that his picks would be in line with their positions and help allay lingering reservations.
For anyone who has been listening to Trump on the campaign trail this last year, you would know that his view on judges is that they should follow the Constitution as it’s written and not make things up, which we’ve seen way to much of for the last 100+ years. Here is the list posted by the Cato Institute:
- Judge Steve Colloton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit (Iowa)
- Justice Allison Eid of the Colorado Supreme Court
- Judge Raymond Gruender of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit (Missouri)
- Judge Thomas Hardiman of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit (Pennsylvania)
- Judge Raymond Kethledge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit (Michigan)
- Justice Joan Larsen of the Michigan Supreme Court
- Justice Thomas Lee of the Utah Supreme Court
- Judge William Pryor of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit (Alabama)
- Justice David Stras of the Minnesota Supreme Court
- Judge Diane Sykes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit (Wisconsin)
- Justice Don Willett of the Texas Supreme Court
The news comes as Trump is working to bring together a fractured Republican Party and earn the trust of still-skeptical establishment Republicans who question his electability in the general election, as well as conservatives in his party still wary of his commitment to their cause.
Personally, I say “Screw the Establishment!” Trump crushing their choices was due to the GOP(e)’s constant screwing over of the base. However, releasing a potential list of judges will help with people out in flyover country.
His campaign stressed the list was compiled “first and foremost, based on constitutional principles, with input from highly respected conservatives and Republican Party leadership.”
In other words, he didn’t talk to idiots like Bill Kristol, Charles Krauthammer, or Ben Sasse.
“I have a lot of people that are conservative that really like me, love everything I stand for, but they really would like to know my view because perhaps outside of the defense of our country, perhaps the single most important thing the next president is going to have to do is pick Supreme Court justices,” Trump told Hannity.
And this is where we get into arguments on the what a conservative is in the U.S. A lot of the Screaming Never Trump!(ers), are anything but actual conservatives. If they were, they would have shut down Jeb Bush’s failed run before it got started rather than shove him along as the “Great RINO Hope! In all probability, few if any of people Trump listed would even be considered by the Bushie’s and the RINO’s. Another interesting thing about this list is that some of the people on it have been bashing Trump.
Willett, a justice on the Texas Supreme Court, is perhaps best known for his heavy use of social media. His Twitter handle, (at)justicewillett, has more than 35,000 followers. Willett however has repeatedly mocked Trump on Twitter.
And Judge Willet wasn’t the only one. Another judge on Trumps list, Diane Sykes, is, or was married to Charlie Sykes, a conservative radio talk show host and a rabid Never Trump!(er) I never heard of Charlie Sykes prior to the announcement of the list, and did a quick look at his site.
Um hum. Yeah. Hummmm. Okay then! This guy really doesn’t like Donald Trump even if he did say his wife/ex-wife could be one of his choices. Which brings us to the Never Trump!(ers). They are now coming across to people as badly as the Left’s Social Justice Warriors led by the infamous Trigglypuff.
From the reactions I’ve been reading across the Innerwebtubes, the NeverTrump!(ers) are trying to keep their heads from exploding. The latest is that the list Trump released is meaningless and Trump never said he would choose one or more of these people for the Supreme Court.
It is true that Trump didn’t say he would choose any of these people, but he will choose someone of similar judicial views and scholarship. Compare this to the judicial nightmares foisted on us by Barack Obama and to some extent George W Bush. (Can we say John Roberts? Sure we can!) With Obama, we’ve gotten to many judges who consider the Constitution to be nothing more than guidelines they can ignore, and with John Roberts? Just look at that fools Obamacare rulings.
If Clinton should win, and if the Democrats flip the senate, then you can expect judges to be appointed who will trash the constitution completely. You will see the 2nd Amendment basically ended, along with most of the bill of rights. Anything that smacks of individual freedom and a restriction on the government will be struck down by Clinton judges. Trump comes across, to me anyway, as a Constitutional Constructionist. Basically, he thinks the Constitution means what it says, unlike many Yale and Harvard Law grads now on the benches around the country. It makes a nice change.
