Good day all. Last week the British voted to tell the European Union that it just wasn’t working out and that it would be for the best if they saw other countries. With that vote, the current Prime Minister, David Cameron, who wanted to marry the EU, announced that he would resign from office.
This led to speculation on who would be the next Prime Minister. Many people thought it would be the former Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. Well, that idea has just been ended. Here are the details from The Sun:
The Conservative leadership race was blown wide open this morning as the Justice Secretary announced he was running for leader while also knifing Boris in an extraordinary attack on his credentials. BORIS Johnson sensationally pulled out of the Tory leadership race today after former ally Michael Gove brutally torpedoed his chances of becoming the next PM.
I’ll flat out admit that I barely know anything about Johnson. I’ve read a few of his columns, I knew he was the Mayor of London and I saw him on Top Gear being interviewed by the Great Jeremy Clarkson. (He of the right cross) I was looking forward to seeing Johnson as Prime Minister, but, oh well.
It derailed what was shaping up to be a simple two-horse race between lead “unity” candidate Home Secretary Theresa May and Brexiteer Boris, whose team had previously boasted of having 100 MPs on board. In a series of devastating blows Leader of the House of Commons Chris Grayling was unveiled as Mrs. May’s campaign chief and Boris’ former campaign chief Nick Boles jumped ship to Mr Gove’s team.
They triggered the dramatic scenes this afternoon when Boris waited until the end of what had been planned as his leadership launch to drop the bombshell.
He told the packed press conference that Britain had a chance “to think globally again, to lift our eyes to the horizon, to bring our uniquely British voice and values, powerful, humane, progressive, to the great global forums without being elbowed aside by a supranational body” and the agenda for the next PM would be to “seize this chance and make this our moment to stand tall in the world”.
The former mayor of London added: “I must tell you, my friends, you who have waited faithfully for the punchline of this speech, that having consulted colleagues, and in view of the circumstances in Parliament, I have concluded that person cannot be me.
“My role will be to give every possible support to the next Conservative administration, make sure we properly fulfil the mandate of the people that was delivered at the referendum and to champion the agenda I believe in.”
Well, that was surprising. However, it really isn’t our concern. What matters is that whoever becomes Prime Minister pulls the plug on the EU connection. I wonder if Boris is going to be left by the side of the road, or if he’ll be brought into some sort of cabinet position?
Recall that Winston Churchill spent the 1930’s in the “Political Wilderness” due to his hammering of the Appeasers and constant warning of the rise of Hitler and the Nazi’s. Eventually, Churchill was asked to form a government after the catastrophic failure of Neville Chamberlain. This could also happen to Johnson.
