Good day all, this is the Angry Systems Administrator. Recently, Apple released their latest version of the Iphone. One of the major differences is this version doesn’t have a headphone jack in it.
The idea is that Apple will be able to rake in more money by forcing their fans to buy a wireless set of earbuds. These will cost significantly more to buy and will require recharging. Then there is the issue of losing them. Personally, I rank this right down with fixed batteries in cellphones, as Samsung has recently discovered.
Well, someone decided to pull the wool over the eyes of the Apple fanboys and girls with a video on how to create a 3.5mm headphone jack. It involves a power drill and a 3.5mm drill bit. Here is the tutorial:

Umm, yeah. That really isn’t the way to install a 3.5mm headphone jack. However, since these are Apple Fans, and they aren’t noted for their great technical prowess, (Otherwise they wouldn’t be paying for overpriced, locked down junk), some of these “Geniuses” actually tried to drill out a jack on there brand new, very expensive Iphones. According to The Sun:
A fake YouTube video claiming to show users how to get the much-missed sound input has gone viral – with many unknowing victims following its lead. Owners have copied the video’s instructions to place the phone in a clamp and take a 3.5mm drill to where the headphone hole used to be.
Needless to say drilling a hole into your iPhone will leave you with a very broken handset – and not the promised addition.
Apple’s newest model has ditched the jack in favour of bluetooth headphones to make more room for internal hardware. But customers have been left angry at the decision – with some taking extreme measures to bring back the old hole. As a result some desperate viewers were duped into destroying their new handsets with the cruel DIY tip.
Yes, there were people stupid enough to drill out and destroy their Iphones. Here are a few examples, courtesy of The Sun:
Furious James Ceja commented on the video: “I tried this and ended up with display destruction and it not working… I really committed the biggest mistake of my life by watching this video.”
Oh, it gets better, for varying degrees of “better”.
David Iriarte added: “A friend of mine told me it worked for him, but my iPhone won’t turn on after I drilled the hole for the jack.
“I checked and it was the 3.5mm drill, so I made no mistake there! What happened? Any of you have the same problem?”
Toekneechair questioned: “Ok I am sure it’s in the comments somewhere but my friend told me to ask what size drill bit am I supposed to use?
“Also I don’t have that clamp thingy, can I or my friend hold it while we drill? I don’t want to ruin my phone.
“Thanks for all the help guys…”
I have no doubt that one of these morons will try and sue whoever created the video. If this ends up in front of a judge, he or she should laugh out loud, in the faces of the plaintiff and the attorney stupid enough to take the case and toss it out of the courtroom. Then contact the State Bar, (Or it’s British equivalent), and tell them that the lawyer is to stupid to be in the profession and would they do something about it please?
There is a reason I’ve stayed away from Apple products. Using them lowers your IQ levels significantly along with reducing your common sense levels to near zero. Hmm, I wonder…Has anyone done a study of what phone Darwin Award winners use? I suspect they are Iphones.
Thank you.

The most I ever paid for an Apple product was five.bucks at a yard sale for a Mac SE/30(I like old Motorala CISC CPUs). My LG Tracfone is used as a phone (occasional text messages). For everything else I have Nooks, Kindles , a few laptops and workstations with enough screen real estate that these aging eyes can actually read shit.
I would like a mac book pro like I used to have. I actually like the os. But apple took away everything I liked about the hardware. Apparently they do not cater to people with big hands and bad eyes so the 17″ model went away. You are also stuck with what you bought. I have extended the life of my current laptop by updating the ram and the drives. Something I planned to do when I bought it. Can’t do that on a mac any more. Can’t even carry a spare battery.
While I disagree on the overpriced – having tried to price out windows kit in the same feature set and often ending up with bigger, heavier, and even more expensive to boot, and familiar with manufacturing / logistics issues – yeah, a lot of idiots use iPhones. FWIW, a lot of idiots use androids too – and I have to help a lot of said idiots on both platforms.
That said, that people were technologically dumb enough in general to think this was legit is a sign of the times, and yeah, Apple is refocusing on SJW rather than engineering, so more stupid shit like the headphone decision, and various recent bugs, are cropping up.
I’m due another phone and laptop within the year and have no bloody clue, between my disgust for Google, growing disgust for Apple abandoning their focus in favor of SJW, and the mediocre quality of much that is out there for laptops, what I plan to get other than it will not run windows in any context but secondary boot or VM.
We upgraded the company laptop from Windows 7 to Linux. That should keep it going for another few years. Easier than going to Windows 10, especially since the laptop won’t take Win 10. (I seem to recall that the current version of Apple’s operating system is a linux/BSD variant)
As to windows phones? I do believe they are now history.
Yeah – OSX is BSD based and IIRC posix compliant. So I get to play nethack in terminal if I really want, but tools line NMAP and mtr really make my day. Run in mint roughly 30% of the time via VMWare
I have FreeBSD, CentOS, Ubuntu Server and Fedora server running in Hyper-V virtual machines. Also Redhat on AWS.
