Good day all. Yesterday, President-Elect Trump, (Oh that just gives me goosebumps every time I say it), met with the Golf Pro in Chief, President Obama. The meeting was supposed to last about 20 minutes, but went on for a good 90 minutes
There is a lot of speculation on what was discussed, but you can bet your bottom dollar, one thing in the forefront of Obama’s mind was his legacy. Donald Trump ran on essentially reversing everything Obama did, and with his surprising win, President-Elect Trump has essentially a mandate to unravel everything Obama has shoved through, starting with all his questionable executive orders and then Obamacare. Here are a few details from McClatchyDC:
President-elect Donald Trump was surprisingly gracious as he met President Barack Obama in the Oval Office on Thursday but make no mistake: He is already working to erase major parts of Obama’s legacy from the history books.
Trump will be able to change some of Obama’s policies with a quick stroke of the pen. Others will be much more difficult, requiring justification to pass legal hurdles or buy-in from lawmakers on Capitol Hill or foreign leaders.
Rolling back Obamacare will be simple, as will overhauling the tax code. President Trump will need to pressure some of the Republicans on immigration reform and the Trump Wall along the southern border. The Democrats have already declared “Total War” in defending the disaster known as Obamacare. However, the Republicans have a majority in the senate, and can ignore the Democrats if they use the Budget Reconciliation scam Dingy Harry Reid used to ram Obamacare through, or Mitch McSpineless could just nuke the filibuster, something else we can thank Dingy Harry for.
Later in the day, Trump emerged from meetings with House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and noted that he wants to work on health care, immigration, lower taxes and job creation – all moving in an opposite direction from Obama.
I have no doubt that the first things President Trump takes care of legislatively will be the things everyone, (at least on the Republican side), agree on. The tougher things will take a little time, but I think Trump will get them as well. If the RINO’s start balking, President Trump can do a Reagan and go around Congress, directly to the People. Nothing soils the silken undies of Rino’s like hearing the phrase from their constituents,”If you don’t, we’ll primary you!” when they go against their wishes.
In one important way, Obama made it easier for Trump to undo some of his accomplishments.
William Galston, a former White House adviser to Bill Clinton who’s now a senior fellow at the center-left Brookings Institution, noted that Obama relied on a slew of executive actions to get things done after his Democratic Party lost control of Congress.
“One of the consequences of the last six years has been an increasingly expansive use of executive power,” Galston said.
And many of those are currently being challenged in the courts. Obama, indulging in his inner dictator, made the phrase, “I have a cellphone and a pen” his mantra. Now President Trump can and will use Executive Orders to make Obama eat those words. The best part? Since Trump will be undoing the legally and constitutionally questionable orders, all those cases will become moot.
Trump’s presidency puts many of Obama’s achievements in jeopardy. He’s pledged to repeal the Affordable Care Act, pull out of the Iran nuclear deal, resume deporting immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally, kill policies designed to help ease climate change as well as the Trans-Pacific Partnership – a pending trade pact involving 12 Pacific Rim nations – and remove Obama’s executive actions.
“Almost everything a president does by executive order can be undone by a subsequent executive order,” said Ken Mayer, a political science professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who wrote “With the Stroke of a Pen: Executive Orders and Presidential Power.”
And that’s why a President should go through Congress and enact laws. Those are usually a lot more difficult to reverse. Obama is about to discover that “He who lives by the Executive Order, has his legacy die by the Executive order”. Obama is about to see eight years of his socialist totalitarian dreams and accomplishments flushed down the toilet of history.
