Good day all. Christmas started coming to Americans very early this year, starting around November 9th. Since Donald Trump became President-Elect Trump, thousands of jobs that were scheduled to leave the United States are now staying put, and others are returning to these shores.
The latest company to announce it was moving to the United States is especially poetic. A Chinese manufacturer has announced it will be opening a plant in Ohio due to costs and taxes in China. Here are the details from Yahoo News:
A Chinese auto glass tycoon has caused a stir by shifting part of his empire to the United States and setting up a factory in Ohio, citing high taxes and soaring labour costs at home.
The 70-year-old tycoon’s decision to open a glass factory in the eastern American state of Ohio in October — a rare case of jobs being exported from China to the US — triggered an outpouring of criticism on social media.
The phrase “Cao Dewang has escaped” became a hot topic, generating nearly 10 million views on the Twitter-like Weibo microblog and many comments urging China to “not let Cao Dewang run away”.
Cao’s Fuyao Glass Industry Group — a supplier to big names including Volkswagen and General Motors — claims to be the biggest exporter of auto glass in the world, reporting 2.6 billion yuan ($370 million) profits last year.
And now he is exporting jobs to America.
Cao defended himself in an interview with the Beijing News Wednesday, saying he “did not run and will not run. The centre of my business is in China because I’m Chinese”.
“I’m a business man and I’m doing business in the US,” he said. “I’m merely reminding the government” that taxes and labour costs are too high.
Gee, where have we heard that excuse before? Oh, I know! We’ve been hearing it from American manufacturers for the last 25 years.
In an interview with the state-owned China Business News last week, Cao said the country was home to the “world’s highest taxes” and that the manufacturing industry suffered under taxes 35 percent higher than those imposed by the US.
And once President Trump and the Congress get down overhauling the tax code, taxes should be a lot less. This means more business can afford to open, hire American workers, (And lawful permanent resident aliens and NOT H1B holders), which means more people paying taxes and buying things and which means more jobs, etc, etc, etc. I get the feeling that not only are Proggie heads going to go POP, but a lot of senior Chamber of Commerce and Beltway Bandits heads are going to detonate as well.
The Fuyao group owns production lines in nearly a dozen Chinese cities including the capital Beijing and the commercial hub Shanghai. It also has a factory in Russia, according to its website.
It actually makes some sense to locate manufacturing facilities in other countries. Glass is rather cheap to make, but can be expensive to ship. However, saying that it’s actually cheaper to make the glass in the United States because Chinese labor costs and taxes are to high just brings a smile to my face. Thank you President-Elect Trump for doing something that neither King Put or Felonia von Pantsuit could ever do. Make America Great again.
