Good day all. This is a simple rant from me, the Angry Webmaster. I have several windows that need to have the shades on them replaced. I’ve done this before, and it should have been very simple.
That turned out not to be the case. The last time I needed to do this, four or five years ago, I simply went to Home Depot with one that needed to be replaced. They measured it, and sold me what I needed. As I recall, it was only about $10-15 dollars.
I tried doing the same thing over the weekend. I went into Home Depot, and since I didn’t know where they had put that department, I asked. I found the window shades and pulled a couple out of the rack to compare them to the bad one I had brought in. Then I looked at the price they wanted, and practically excreted a square piece of masonry.
They wanted a minimum of $35 dollars! I then started looking at them in greater detail. These weren’t what I thought they were. The ones I have are what everyone thinks of when they think of pull down shades. A simple piece of vinyl with a pair of spring loaded end pieces. These are the ones that you give a slight pull to and up they go.
No, these were some sort of motorized “Window Treatments.” Hello? Window treatments? My windows aren’t sick and don’t need any treatment! What they need are simple, basic, shades! I left Home Depot and started shopping online. I went to Amazon since everyone goes there. They had the shades I wanted, just not the ones I wanted. (Not in the length I needed) They were also pretty shabby.
I checked Lowes online and had no better luck then I did at Home Depot. I even took a look at, Ick, Yuck, Walmart. Even “Wally World” didn’t have what I was looking for. It seems that the Yuppie Scum have decided that inexpensive, yet effective window shades are just to “Passe” and now no one really makes them anymore, at least not in a price range that makes sense.
It’s the same way these days for people who want a manual transmission in their cars. If you want a stick shift, you actually have to pay extra for it. Considering that most people under the age of 40 have no idea how to “Drive stick”, I can see why they aren’t offered. Still, to charge more? Automatic Transmissions actually cost more than standards.
Oh my Gawd! I’m old and crotchety!! I’m no longer interested in the “Whiz Bang” things I used to be! I’m this guy!
I think I’ll go get drunk now.
