Good day all. Once again, events have overtaken me. I wrote this meaning to post it some time ago. Recently, the head of one of the more vicious Mexican drug cartels had his head turned into a dugout canoe. Since then, a full blown war has erupted between the Cartels and the Mexican police and military.

There is a lot going on of course, but it appears that the Cartel in question, the Jalisco New Generation cartel has a reputation for extreme violence. Even worse, the vacation site, Puerto Vallarta in in the area and is loaded with America tourists. I’m going to be jumping around various news sites. Here are some of the details from the New York Post:
The deadly violence sparked by the military killing of an infamous cartel leader has now spread widely across Mexico, as American citizens near the border were warned to shelter in place.
Shelter in place? Well, perhaps in the Democrat controlled regions like Kalifornistan and parts of New Mexico and Arizona. For Texas? I think it’s going to be more of an “Open Season, no limit” on any cartel members who cross over to cause trouble. However, there is a very real problem that the Cartels might just try and pull a Pancho Villa raid into the United States.
Cervantes — better known as “El Mencho” — died in custody Sunday, shortly after Mexican special forces captured him in Tapalpa, Jalisco state.
Frankly, no great loss to society as far as I’m concerned, however we may have to deploy the military to the border with orders to fire on anyone armed and approaching the border.
The notorious drug kingpin was seriously injured in a firefight between military commandos and his bodyguards and died from his injuries en route to Mexico City.
I’ve seen videos of the raid. It was essentially a full blown military assault. This set off the cartels and they have attacked Mexican police and military units. Worse, at least for the police, the cartels are better armed and it’s not stuff you get in your local gun store.
Cartel members responded to his death by declaring war on the Mexican government of socialist Claudia Sheinbaum, shutting down Jalisco’s state capital, Guadalajara — the country’s second-largest city — as they engaged in running gun battles with authorities.
From what I’ve seen on the Internet and what is being reported from other sources, these aren’t “Running gun battles,” they are full dress attacks on police and military units. Worse, Americans are getting caught in the middle of all this.
In Puerto Vallarta, just south of the border, US citizens were issued a stay-in-place order, as narco gangs unleashed their bloody rampage on the resort town. Terrifying footage from across Mexico shows torched buildings and vehicles, while panicked lines of tourists are seen trying to flee the country at multiple airports
Historically, the cartels generally stayed away from the tourist areas. This did this for a number of reasons. One was that these areas are bringing in large amounts of legitimate money. Another reason was that they didn’t want to give the United States any reason to flat out invade Mexico and go full bore against the cartels.
President Sheinbaum appealed for peace on Monday, addressing the media for the first time since “El Mencho’s” death.
“The most important thing right now is to guarantee peace and security for the entire population of all of Mexico,” she told a press conference.
Sheinbaum is in the pockets of the Cartels. I’m wondering if she even knew about the raid on this criminal? I know that President Trump and the administration don’t trust her and have just about had it with her antics. It looks like she might have finally figured out that kowtowing to the Cartels was a good way to have the United States come in and clean house.
President Claudia Sheinbaum urged calm and authorities announced late Sunday they had cleared most of the more than 250 cartel roadblocks across 20 states. The White House confirmed that the U.S. provided intelligence support to the operation to capture the cartel leader and applauded Mexico’s army for taking down a man who was one of the most wanted criminals in both countries.

Mexico hoped the death of the world’s biggest fentanyl traffickers would ease Trump administration pressure to do more against the cartels, but many remained hunkered down and on edge as they waited to see the powerful cartel’s reaction.
Well, we know how the cartels are reacting, pretty much as expected. They have gone on the warpath and while their primary targets are the various police and military units, they are also shooting at anything that moves and terrorizing the general public. This includes the vacation resorts that had been generally left alone. Returning to the New York Post story:
In Puerto Vallarta, just south of the border, US citizens were issued a stay-in-place order, as narco gangs unleashed their bloody rampage on the resort town. Terrifying footage from across Mexico shows torched buildings and vehicles, while panicked lines of tourists are seen trying to flee the country at multiple airports.
This has led the White House Spokesman, Karoline Leavitt to threaten the cartel sicarios and the cartel heads. According to Fox News:
The Trump administration issued a fiery warning to Mexican drug cartels on Tuesday as hundreds of Americans remain stranded in Mexico following an explosion in violence across the country.
“The Mexican drug cartels know not to lay a finger on a single American, or they will pay severe consequences under this president,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday on “Fox & Friends.”
Without question there is a military Quick Reaction Force standing by and I won’t be at all surprised if there isn’t a group in or near Puerto Vallarta ready to move if needed. The Cartel leadership knows that if they go after the American tourists, they are going to see the U.S. Marines coming in and they won’t be playing nice. Then there are all those fun people from the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment–Delta, aka Delta Force, looking for something to do.

President Trump has been serious when it comes to securing the border, both against illegal immigration and narcotics trafficking. He has been applying serious pressure on the current Mexican president to clean out the Cartels once and for all. This is what probably led to the raid that killed Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes and tripped off the ongoing battles.
There is also a fair chance that the other cartels are seeing this as a chance to take over more territory. Frankly, if they’re killing each other and leaving everyone else alone, I consider that a good thing. The problem is that these clowns are trigger happy and not to particular about who they are shooting at.
Mexico is a borderline failed state. It’s suffering from the same problem that most of the countries that were at one time part of the old Spanish Empire. The old Spanish empire was not big on building lasting infrastructure, imposing the rule of law and basically conducting business and trade. It was an empire built on exploitation.
Every once in a while, you get people in these nations who want to build, and make their countries strong and great with actual justice and the rule of law. The problem is they have to many who put themselves and their families first. This is a cultural problem and until the culture itself decides to change, you see these cycles happening over and over again.

For those who think the United States should just go in and take control of Mexico, or even some of the northern states bordering the United States, consider what we will need to do to fix things. It won’t be pretty. All we can really do is secure our borders, occasionally remove the more troublesome criminal elements and provide advice.
Empire building is not something the United States has ever been very good at and traditionally, not something we really want to do. Eventually, this violent cycle will die down as the cartels run out of money and ammunition. New deals will be struck and things will go back to their usual corrupt ways. Then it will all start up again a few years later.
