Good morning, this is the Angry Systems Administrator, and I intend to live up to my moniker today. This morning, there was an plugin update notification for Site Kit by Google. This was just another update for a plugin we’ve been using to tie into Adsense.
I’ve updated this plugin in the past with no issue. Today, of course, bright and early, there was an issue. The update process took down the entire site.

I’ve had this happen far to many times in the past, so I knew what to do. I renamed the plugin folder and that allowed the site to load. Then I spent the next 90 minutes trying to correct the issue.
So far, I haven’t been able to. Since this directly affects Adsense, I needed to figure out a way to load the Adsense code into the blog’s templates. I found a way to do so manually, so that should fix that issue. I am testing this so you may see different formats pop up. Feel free to use an ad blocker.
This is the reason that I don’t allow WordSplat to auto-update the plugins. If something breaks, I have to go through and rename folders until the site loads again and then reverse the process to activate the plugins that aren’t an issue. I’m not sure why this is happening.
I suspect that it’s due to things like the database and older plugins that have been removed that haven’t been purged from the database. Unfortunately, I am not a developer or a DBA so I am very hesitant about digging around in the database. Sadly, we can’t afford to hire a contractor to clean things up for us.
While I don’t plan on really digging into things today, I may see what I can do over the weekend. I do know that anything I do will temporarily bring the site down so I want to try an minimize the disruption.
Thank you for your time.

Ok, I’m seeing ads and adjustments are definitely going to be needed.
