The 2014 Winter Olympics begin

Good day all. The 2014 Winter Olympics are beginning in Sochi, Russia. Does anyone really care? I know I don’t. I freely admit that I am not a jock, but it’s been years since I had any interest in the Olympics.

Why don’t I care about them? One reason is the God Awful coverage by the American networks. They spend all their time interviewing the contestant’s cousin’s milkman and nothing on the actual sporting event. I really don’t care about the cousin’s milkman and frankly I don’t care about the contestant and how hard they worked to get there. This is a given. How about we watch “The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat” instead?

And then there is what’s going on in Russia. They are terrified that RIF’s ((Radical Islamic Fundamentalist)) from Chechnya will stop in for a cup of coffee and a few bombings. To try and prevent this they have essentially deployed a division of troops in the area. Along with the troops, they have deployed surface to air missiles, warships and everything a good police state needs to maintain security. Frankly, I can’t fault them for this. If the Chechens have any sense, they will stay far away from the Olympics. If they pull a stunt there and kill a bunch of people good old Vladykins is going to nuke Chechnya. You may think I’m just joking a bit, but if they Olympics become another Munich, the Russian government is going to go berserk and make the purges under Stalin look like a minor incident.

Stalin

And then there are the hotels, or as I’ve been reading the last few days, the “Helltels.” Never mind cockroaches, it’s a bit cold for them. No, it’s more like the sinks are delivering hot and cold running diarrhea instead of water. And speaking of the showers, it looks like the FSB ((Federal Security Bureau)) is falling back on it’s KGB ((Komitet gosudarstvennoy bezopasnosti)) roots and has installed cameras in the showers. It’s so bad, that people are tweeting their experiences. Here are a few comments coming from Sochi courtesy of the Washington Post:

CNN booked 11 rooms in one @Sochi2014 media hotel five months ago. We have been here for a day and only one room is available. #cnnsochi

— Harry Reekie (@HarryCNN) February 4, 2014

Well it IS CNN and they are a slowly dying network. Maybe the check bounced?

Still waiting for “preparations” on hotel room to finish. Hoping they’re origami-folding toilet roll, rather than, say, putting the roof on.

You are expecting roof? You are spoiled English SWINE! Roof is luxury extra! You pay standard Russian rate, not luxury rate!

The reception of our hotel in #Sochi has no floor. But it does have this welcoming picture. pic.twitter.com/8isdoBuytl

In America you have Gideon Bible. In Russia we have picture of Tsar Vladimer!

People have asked me what surprised me the most here in Sochi. It’s this. Without question … it’s … THIS. pic.twitter.com/1jj05FNdCP

Count yourself lucky Comrade. You have toilet paper. We give Arabs bucket of sand.

My hotel has no water. If restored, the front desk says, “do not use on your face because it contains something very dangerous.” #Sochi2014

— Stacy St. Clair (@StacyStClair) February 4, 2014

Water restored, sorta. On the bright side, I now know what very dangerous face water looks like. #Sochi #unfiltered pic.twitter.com/sQWM0vYtyz

— Stacy St. Clair (@StacyStClair) February 4, 2014

Now for the translation. “Comrade plumber have Vodka for lunch. He connect water pipe to toilet drain.”

And it goes on and on. At least the food will be plentiful. Oh, and the Russians have been trapping and shooting stray dogs in the area ((Sochi Culling Stray Dogs Ahead of the Olympics)). Hmm, on the other hand, I think this will be a good time for tourists to try a vegan diet.

So, rotten television coverage, typical Soviet Russian workmanship and planning with a good chance of a terrorist attack. Gee, no wonder no one is going. I have a feeling I’m not going to be the only one ignoring the 2014 Winter Olympics in wonderful Sochi, Russia. Time to fire up Netflix and my Kindle.

give-a-damn
