Remember that phrase? “It’s a free country.” That is something people would say when someone wanted to do something or go somewhere. Usually, the person saying “It’s a free country didn’t approve of what the other person was going to do, but wasn’t going to try and stop him.
I can’t remember the last time I heard that phrase. I think it was in the 90’s during the Clinton Administration. Then, people stopped saying “It’s a free country” and started saying “It’s still a free country.” I think that version started around the time of Branch Davidian massacre in Waco, Texas.
Then, the 9/11 attack happened and we got things like the Patriot Act, the FISA court, (although they’ve been around for a while), National Security letters and the NSA spying on American citizens inside the United States. After that, people seemed to have stopped saying “It’s still a free country.”
I haven’t heard anyone say “It used to be a free country,” but I won’t be surprised when I hear it for the first time. I think the reason this has happened is simple. For decades, certain political groups have worked to institute centralized control. The want to control the financial systems, medical systems, education systems and the flow of information. They have pretty much succeeded and now you are starting to see the results.
Absolute intolerance for anyone who doesn’t toe the central authority’s line. If someone doesn’t like your way of thinking, then you are to be destroyed, even killed. We see that the attackers are people primarily on the left. These people have been trained for years not to think for themselves. They are literally repelled at the idea of being personally responsible for their actions.
These people will scream about their rights, but if you don’t happen to agree with them, they will quite happily suppress your rights. Currently, we have seen a new CEO of the Mozilla Foundation forced out of his job simply because he donated money to the anti-gay marriage campaign in California years ago. We are seeing people having invitations to be commencement speakers being withdrawn because they do not agree with the Politically Correct world view of certain very loud groups.
Now we are seeing an actual attempt to rewrite the First Amendment to suppress the rights of certain people, groups and corporations to speak out on political matters. We have the Senate Majority Leader taking to the floor and slandering people because they won’t toe the Progressive line. (The reason he gets away with this is that the constitution protects the speech of members of congress in the House or Senate. They can say things that would get anyone else sued, and rightfully so)
However, all it not lost. We are seeing more people starting to push back. They begun to organize, raise funds and put people on the ballot that support the Constitution and freedom. For over 20 years, Talk Radio has been the voice of people who are pushing back against the centralization of power in fewer and fewer hands. Of course, the Progressives are moving to shut down these groups, using various government agencies to harass them and in some cases, outright threats.
The problem for the groups on the left is the people they like to insult, threaten and attack are also the most heavily armed segment of the American Population. They also tend to be far better shots then the Progressives goon squads and quite a few have military experience. While the last thing these people want is a shooting war inside the United States, these individuals have reached the breaking point.
The first cracks appeared during the Presidentially mandated shutdown of various monuments in Washington. We saw veterans from World War Two to Iraq and Afghanistan ignoring the orders of the Progressives and breaking down barricades. We saw people recalling elected officials for the first time for passing laws that stripped Americans of their God give rights. We have others who are refusing to comply with laws outright, and local law enforcement officers refusing to enforce those same laws.
Then we had the Bundy Ranch incident in Nevada. We saw the power of the government, in full flower, with threats of violence, assaults, suppression of the right to assemble and protest. It was met with hundreds of people who decided that this was as far as they were going to be pushed. They met the threats from government agents with threats of their own. In the end, the government, seeing what would happen if they continued to push, back down and withdraw.
Today, people might say “It used to be a free country once.” Now they are adding “I hope we can make it a free country again.”
