Good day all. As you know, Colorado legalized the sale and possession of Marijuana. As you would expect, stoners of all ages, (Above 18), moved to Colorado and started sucking on the bongs and doobees.
Frankly, I don’t care about those idiots. If they want to bbq their brains, let them. What I do object to is paying for their daily pot. It looks like I’m not the only one. It’s becoming apparent that these stoners, the ones who are on welfare, are using their EBT cards to by pot. Now there is a move to put an end to this. You would think that making sure that welfare was being used for things like food and shelter would cross party lines. You would be mistaken. Here are the details from the Washington Times:
Everyone in Colorado from Republicans to marijuana moguls wants to stop welfare cash from being used to buy recreational pot, but standing in their way are the state’s formidable legislative Democrats. Despite mounting evidence that “welfare for weed” is more than an urban myth, Democratic legislators are balking at a bill that would add marijuana dispensaries and strip clubs to the list of places, along with casinos and liquor stores, where debit-style benefits cards cannot be used to withdraw cash from automatic teller machines, or ATMs.
Why the hell do Democrats want to allow stoners to use taxpayer funds to pay for their marijuana? They already ban using EBT cards for booze, gambling and strip clubs.
“Even though it’s not part of that ban requirement, marijuana is illegal at the federal level, and we just want to be proactive and ahead of that,” said Levetta Love, director of Office of Economic Security for the Colorado Department of Human Services, in testimony last week in support of the bill before a Senate committee.
That makes sense of course. Colorado is the first state to legalize marijuana for recreational use and is the test case for other states. As Colorado learns about how people are using, (and abusing), maijuana, they will make adjustments as needed. Banning EBT cards from pot shops is something almost everyone agrees with.
Last year, Democrats said they were worried about limiting access for welfare recipients, many of whom don’t have bank accounts and may find it difficult to locate nearby ATMs in their neighborhoods. Democrats were also dubious about whether EBT cardholders were really blowing public dollars on pot.
The excuse that deadbeat stoners welfare recipients can’t find an ATM machine and have to go into a head shop is bogus. ATM machines are all over the place. Pretty much every supermarket I’ve been to has an ATM machine, not to mention that the checkout counters are also set up to handle the cards. As to the Democrats not believing that these cards would be abused this way? Yeah, pull the other finger. It has a bell on it. There’s a reason cards are banned in liquor stores and strip clubs.
“My county still expresses concerns about this bill, and they don’t know how big a problem it is as far as people using this money for the activities listed here, so I’m going to be a no,” said Democratic state Sen. Matt Jones.
Jones then took a hit from his joint.
Liberals in Colorado and elsewhere have mocked concerns about welfare recipients getting high on the taxpayers’ dime, exemplified by a headline in September from Media Matters, which said, “Right-Wing Media’s Mythological ‘Welfare for Weed’ Campaign Has Resulted in Actual GOP Legislation.”
But investigations by other media outlets have shown that the problem is more than a myth. On Thursday, Fox31 Denver reported that at least 17 lbs. of marijuana were likely purchased with public dollars in 2014, based on an examination of all ATM transactions using the EBT card in state marijuana dispensaries.
That’s a small percentage of Colorado’s annual pot sales, but the television station’s report nonetheless concluded that the “welfare for weed” phenomenon is “a reality in Colorado.”
“Using computer matching, FOX31 Denver traced at least $32,275 in welfare cash that was withdrawn from ATMs located inside secure marijuana retail facilities,” said the report. “Withdrawals inside pot shops ranged from $20 to $400 with a total of at least 465 separate transactions. ATMs in 82 different marijuana dispensaries were used; that’s a quarter of the licensed recreational stores statewide.”
I can only think of one reason that Democrats would want to allow stoners to use their EBT cards in places that sell marijuana. They think that a stoned voter will pull the lever and vote straight democrat. Of course, there is the issue of the stoners actually having the motivation to do anything other then take a toke and chow down on Twinkies. These clods need to block EBT cards where pot is sold. It makes sense and the alternative is a top down regulation coming out of Washington. We know how those usually work.
