Good day all. It’s been a while since we heard anything from Alan Grayson, Representative, (Allegedly), of Florida’s 9th District. I say allegedly because he represent himself and the Democrats, not his constituents. Now he’s decided that it would be a good idea to threaten Ted Cruz.
Grayson is a well known embarrassment to both the House of Representatives and the state of Florida. He has a skin thinner than Obama’s and has a penchant for threatening anyone who isn’t Alan Grayson. Now he’s decided that if Ted Cruz should win the Republican nomination for President, he’s going to sue to keep him off the ballot. Here are the details of his latest avoidance of sanity from The Washington Times:
Rep. Alan Grayson said Wednesday that he plans to file suit if Sen. Ted Cruz, who was born in Canada, wins the Republican presidential nomination. Speaking with liberal Fox News radio host Alan Colmes, Mr. Grayson, a Florida Democrat, called the 2016 Republican presidential lineup “appalling.”
Of course it’s appalling to Grayson. They are Republicans after all, and they aren’t supporting everything that Grayson wants.
“It’s resolved itself into this weird reality show. It’s not ‘The Biggest Loser’ that they’re choosing, it’s ‘The Biggest Bigot,’” he said.
Mr. Colmes asked if all of the GOP candidates are bigots. “Well show me one who represents the exception here,” Mr. Grayson responded. “In a sense I guess Cruz is not technically that way, because he’s technically not even an American.”
“Well, his mother was born here,” Mr. Colmes replied, “though it’s interesting to me that the people who had a problem with Obama’s birth certificate don’t have a problem with Ted Cruz who literally was born in another country. And he renounced his Canadian citizenry.”
An aside here. Senator Cruz had no idea that he had technical duel citizenship until a few years ago. Once he found out, he promptly renounced any claims to Canadian citizenship. The thought that Cruz is Canadian is laughable. To begin with, he doesn’t have that well known Canadian speech impediment. The one where every sentence is ended with “Eh.”
Mr. Grayson added, “The Constitution says natural-born Americans, so now we’re counting Canadians as natural-born Americans? How does that work? I’m waiting for the moment that he gets the nomination and then I will file that beautiful lawsuit saying that he’s unqualified for the job because he’s in eligible.”
If Grayson actually attempts to file this suit, it will be laughed out of court. Cruz’s mother was an American Citizen when he was born. His mother just happened to be in Canada when he made his entrance to the world stage. This situation was already covered with Senator John McCain. He was born in Panama in the Canal Zone. His parents were both American citizens. He just happened to be born outside the United States. Neither of his parents renounced their citizenship or became citizens of another country.
Alan Grayson is a disgrace to the House of Representatives, to the citizens of Florida and to the legal profession. He was bounced out of office once before and only managed to get back in when his district was redrawn, favoring Democrats. I have one question for you Representative Grayson. Have you stopped beating your wife?

When McCain was born in the Canal Zone, the Canal Zone was part of the United States, just like Texas. At the time, the legal definition of the United States was: “The 48 contiguous states, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Panama Canal Zone, Guam, American Samoa, and Swains Island.” Natives of all those places, except for Swains Island, were U.S. citizens; natives of Swains Island were U.S. nationals.
Jimmy Carter gave the Canal Zone away, but subsequently the Northern Marianas were added to the United States.
If Cruz’s mother met certain U.S. residence requirements at the time of his birth (and the law changed periodically), Cruz derived U.S. citizenship through her. Whether that counts as “natural born” is a question I can’t answer.
if you are an American citizen when you’re born (which Cruz was) then doesn’t that qualify as natural born? You were born a citizen without needing to be naturalized.
It’s a legal difference, between “natural born” (born in, and subject to the jurisdiction of, the United States) and “derivative” (deriving U.S. citizen through a parent, and not through birth in, and subject to the jurisdiction of, the United States).
As I said, I don’t know if derivative U.S. citizens qualify as “natural born” or not. That’s too arcane for me ever to have dealt with.
To clarify a little, as commonly used, a “natural born” U.S. citizen is a “native and citizen of the United States.” Cruz is a native of Canada and a citizen of the United States, by derivation. (“Native of” is legalese for “born in”.) Whether this makes a difference, I don’t know.
By the way, I’m not dumping on Cruz, or trying to hurt him in any way. I’d vote for him in a heartbeat. I’m just trying to show that he may in fact have a problem.
