Good day all. It seems we had some political violence the other day. This wasn’t at a Trump rally, surprisingly, but was a local election in Illinois. The daughter of the incumbent decided to staple the opponent in the race.
Now I’ve always known that politics is a blood sport, figuratively speaking, but I’ve never heard of assaulting someone with a staple gun before. Here are the details from Fox News:
An Illinois state lawmaker’s daughter has been charged in connection with a staple gun attack on one of her mother’s political rivals, police said Friday. Jessica Soto and her boyfriend Bradley Fichter, both 26, of Chicago, were charged with three counts of aggravated battery in a March 6 attack on Robert Zwolinski, Reuters reported.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Jessica Soto and Fichter were stapling pro-Soto campaign flyers to a building when Zwolinski and his girlfriend drove by, got out of their car and approached them. An argument then ensued. Cook Couny prosecutors said Fichter punched Zwolinski in the eye and Soto joined in the squabble. Soto then allegedly used the staple gun on Zwolinski’s face. The politician suffered multiple injuries.
I’ll be honest, this is a new one on me. Yes, candidates and their family members occasionally getting into fist fights is not news. Trying to staple your mother’s opponent is original, I’ll give you that. In any case, the stapling didn’t seem to hurt Soto’s mother’s reelection campaign.
Zwolinski was defeated by state Rep. Cynthia Soto, D-Chicago, in a primary election for the state’s 4th District Tuesday.
It’s a good thing for Ms. Soto that Illinois is a state that frowns on the Second Amendment, and that Mr. Zwolinksi wasn’t armed. I do believe trying to staple someone could be considered a threat to life and limb under the law. Now, it’s coming down to who’s fault it is that Zwolinski was nailed stapled by Ms. Soto.
Frank Avila, the couple’s lawyer, accused Zwolinski of starting a fight with his clients and possibly putting a staple in his own head just for attention. He told Judge Maria Kuriakos Cecil that Zwolinksi is the one who should be facing charges.
Yeah, nice try. Only a complete masochist would fire a staple into his forehead. The odds of it penetrating the skull and impacting the brain are to high. Frankly, Soto and her boyfriend are lucky they weren’t hit with attempted murder charges. We’ll see how amused the judge and jury are when this case gets to trial.
