Good day all, this is the Angry Systems Administrator. This week we upgraded the Angry Webmaster’s cellphone after that thumbsucking oaf somehow managed to brick his old one.
Granted, his old one was coming up on 3 years of age, but it was running fine and did everything he needed it to do. Best of all, the battery was replaceable. Recently I did just that, fully expecting to get at least one more year out of it. His original phone was an LG G4 and it was perfect for his needs.
You might recall that when I first purchased it for him, we had some issues with the battery overheating. A quick battery replacement took care of the issue. The replaceable battery was one of the reasons I selected that phone originally rather then going for the Samsung model. This time, the option was pretty much closed out. The manufacturers are going full on to planned obsolescence and the batteries are fixed.
I have been keeping an eye on the new phones, and decided that the LG G6 would fit the Worlds Greatest Idiot’s Angry Webmaster’s needs. I did look at the LG VC 20 and 30 but I couldn’t justify spending Apple levels of money for them. The extra on-board memory would have been nice, but it wasn’t needed.
I first went to T-mobile to see if they had any available. The first store was out, and they sent me to another at the Mall. (I hate the Mall) They had them but the clerk, once I explained my needs, (We use Ting as our service not T-Mobile. Ting uses T-Mobile network on the back end for less money) The clerk actually did the right thing, since I was looking for an unlocked phone and sent me to BestBuy. I picked up an unlocked G6 for about what I expected to pay for it at T-Mobile.
Once I got back to the Anger Central Data Center, the fun began. First it was moving the sim card from his old phone into the new one along with his SD card. Not a problem really and actually much easier then with the original G4. Next, restoring his apps and data. The apps went in fairly easily. Most of his data was on the SD card. Luckily, the moron also did an “Off Site” backup with the LG software.
The major problems were the “2- factor” Authentication apps the Angry Webmaster uses for his Real World Job. I was able to install them, but he had to reactivate them. Since he’s working this weekend, it was rather urgent. Still, it’s pretty much done. Now it’s just learning how it all works. The only other issue I had was the cables. This phone uses the new USB C cables and we didn’t have any. I ordered some from Amazon and they worked fine. (The cables and other items are available through our Shopping links) All in all, he’s happy with the phone.
Now, in other news, some back end stuff. You may have noticed that our ratings system hasn’t been working properly for a while now. We were waiting for an update from the developer, which came in. The problem was, it still isn’t working. It’s a free plugin, so I can’t simply ask them to come and fix it for free. I’ve put another one in place and will slowly change the old system out. I’ll leave it in place for now for archival reasons. (God I hate technology!)
Thank you
~The Angry Systems Administrator~
