Technical and Security stuff

Good day all, this is the Angry Systems Administrator. It’s been a while since I put in an appearance. I’ve been busy trying to get a supply of duct tape, chewing gum and bailing wire to keep everything running.

While doing this, I was notified by our hosting company a few weeks ago that some jackass has hacked a site I help administer. We quickly cleaned up the mess and I’ve locked the site down pretty significantly. It’s not a high traffic site, and it looks like the scumbag was using it to send out spam.

After I locked everything down, I started seeing messages from Loginizer reporting attempts to access an account on that site. The account has been disabled so it’s a waste of time. What I noticed was that these jerks, probably from Russia or the Ukraine were bouncing around any number of IP addresses trying to get around the lockouts. Bad news numbnuts. All your doing is giving us more information to find you.

On the technical side of the house, Firefox has upgraded to the version 80 range. As you would expect, there have been some “Issues,” with the newest version. The major one is getting it to hold the font size/web page size settings. Both the Nitwit owner and I wear glasses and we both like to crank up the default size a bit to make it easier to read web sites.

While we’re doing this, the site will default back from our setting to 100% We normally use a plugin called Zoom Page WE, and it worked fine for years. It’s upgraded constantly. However it isn’t holding the settings in Firefox now. I’ve tried disabling it and just using the built in settings, and even removing and re-adding the plugin. Nothing seems to help.

I’ve used Firefox since it replaced Mozilla, and honestly, it isn’t getting the support it once did. I really don’t like Chrome or Edge, and I hope that by version 81 they will have fixed the problem. I’m reviewing any fixes I can try in the mean time. At least I don’t have to replace my central heating system like the Angry Dork.

Thank you
