About those Amazon ads

Good day all. This is the Angry Systems Administrator. As usual, something has forced me from the comfort of my server room and forced me to post an update.

For once, it isn’t a systems issue on our end, or some cool new piece of tech I’ve been reviewing. This is about the Amazon ads we have at the foot of our posts. Usually these are either generic banners or some sort of add with a series of related products, which also includes a search function.

We don’t make a lot, (Or recently any), money from these ads, but we never expected to get rich off this site. Still, we would put something up that interested us and we hoped, would interest you enough to actually buy something. Well, we just received news that Amazon is ending the banners and native shopping ads and has said they should be removed from all posts since they won’t work any more.

Removing these from the literally thousands of posts on this site is not going to happen. When we go back to review an older post and we see the original ad code, we will change it out. From now on, we’re going to be limited to the Amazon Bounty program, which has ads that expire, or picking individual products, which is time consuming. Here are the specific announcements from Amazon:

Banner Links are going away

Starting July 25, 2023, you’ll no longer be able to create Banners for your content. After August 25, 2023, existing Banner placements will not work. To get ready for this change, please remove Banner Links from your content. You can replace Banners for Bounty Program offers with links generated from the Bounty Program page. You can generate links to category pages directly from Amazon.com using SiteStripe. Please reach out to support with any questions.

Native Shopping Ads are going away

Starting July 25, 2023, you’ll no longer be able to create Native Shopping Ads for your content. After August 25, 2023, existing ads will not work. To get ready for this change, please remove Native Shopping Ads from your content. You can replace Native Shopping Ads with links to products you recommend. You can create new product links using SiteStripe or Product Advertising API. Please reach out to support with any questions.

Mobile Popovers are going away

Starting July 25, 2023, you’ll no longer be able to create Mobile Popovers for your content. After August 25, 2023, existing Mobile Popover placements will not work. To get ready for this change, please remove Mobile Popover scripts from your content. You can create new product links for by using SiteStripe or Product Advertising API. Please reach out to support with any questions.

Why Amazon has decided to kill this program hasn’t been announced. What it does do is make life much harder for us. Over the years, we’ve tried any number of ad programs, starting with Google Ads. Those commies kicked us off the system almost 20 years ago with their usual no recourse or actual explanations. We’ve used other advertising systems and over time they either failed and went away or decided we were not woke enough to provide ads to. Well, we will do what we can of course, but Amazon is not helping themselves all that much.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Are you able to join Amazon’s Affiliate program (if that’s still around)? I’ve known more than a few content creators that made money off carrying Affiliate links on their sites that allowed them to make money from users’ Amazon purchases.

Well…Hell. First Googlag Adsense, all the little advertising aggregators and now Amazon is pulling this crap?
Well, the good news is that clicking on a link and then going to other sections of Amazon still counts, so if you want a Larry Correia book, just click the amazon links and move on from there.
