Good day all. It’s been about a week since President Trump federalized the Washington D.C. police and essentially took over the city. In a totally expected reaction, the Progressive Liberal Leftard Democrats are up in arms over this. However, something else is happening. Crime is actually dropping.
Washington D.C. was set up when the nation was founded to be the capitol of the United States. At the time, the administration of the city was handled by the federal government. There was limited home rule off and on, usually with the city losing that control due to incompetence or corruption. Finally, in 1973, Congress passed the District of Columbia Home Rule Act which set up Washington more or less like any other city. (Congress does still have significant control when the city goes to far)
Since then the city has been run like any other Democrat run city. By and large, it’s a cesspool with out of control crime, incompetent mayors and city councilors with some areas virtual free fire zones between criminal gangs. Finally, after several murders and one of the DOGE people being badly beaten, President Trump said “ENOUGH!” and has federalized the Washington Metro Police under Section 740 of the DC Home Rule Act.
With that takeover along with hundreds of National Guard troops along with hundreds of Federal Agents, actual law enforcement has begun with dozens of arrests of really bad criminals every day. (In some cases, hundreds) We aren’t talking jaywalkers either. Now the stats are starting to come in and unlike the last batch of statistics, these haven’t been cooked, and they show that once again, President Trump is winning. Here are the details from Newsmax:
The D.C. Police Union released new crime statistics on Monday, showing an 8% drop in overall crime in the nation’s capital following President Donald Trump’s announcement of a federal takeover of the Washington, D.C., police force last week.
According to the union, which represents the Metropolitan Police Department’s 3,000 personnel, carjackings are down 83% since federal control was enacted, while robberies dropped 46%.
Violent crime fell 22% in the seven days since federal law enforcement began patrolling D.C.’s streets, and car theft came down 21%. Assault with a deadly weapon and property crime are also each down 6%.
The other thing that’s happening is that it President Trump has put in place a real hard ass in Jeanine Pirro as the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia and she is not fooling around. Still the major issue is the utter stupidity that the Metro Police are operating under. Once the Federal agents pull out, as they are required to do so after 30 days, nothing is going to stop things going back to the way they were.
“While federal assistance gives us a boost, we must repeal the misguided Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Act in order to make these changes permanent,” the union wrote on X, Monday morning.
The D.C. city council passed the Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act of 2022 in December of that year. According to USA Today, the measure was voted down by both the House and the Senate after it was submitted for congressional review in January 2023. Then-President Joe Biden vetoed Congress’ decision, however, and the law took effect in April 2023.
The legislation established restrictions on the use of force, set parameters for the hiring and firing of officers and increased access to disciplinary police records.
This was yet another “Defund the Police” deal with a large helping of DEI thrown in for good measure. Basically, police can’t do anything.
“This bill, which is inarguably the worst piece of public safety legislation the DC Council has ever passed, continues to wreak havoc on the police department,” the D.C. Police Union said in a statement at the time.
“The bill prohibits the hiring of sworn personnel if they have ever received sustained discipline from any law enforcement agency … meaning that these officers, who have spent their careers serving and protecting this city, are ineligible to be retained by the MPD due to prior administrative personnel matters, some of which are over 20 years old,” the union added.
Now the first thing that comes to mind is that the law was meant to get the occasional bad apples off the force. Obviously, I have no idea on any of the disciplinary issues of the officers in question. This doesn’t seem to be what is actually happening here. Apparently, if an officer made a mistake years ago and has done nothing wrong since then, it may have been a one off issue that was corrected. Under this law, that officer is out.
It’s stupidity like this that has turned Washington D.C. into the hellhole it has become. Add to that, it’s almost impossible for an honest citizen to have the means to defend themselves, their families or their neighbors. What President Trump is doing, while good, is a stopgap measure. It looks like the only way to fix Washington is to end the failed home rule experiment. At least the people in Washington are seeing who actually care about them and it certainly isn’t the Democrat Party.
