Good day all. Once again, it’s Labor Day in the United States. Originally set up by socialists, it was co-opted by people and has become a national holiday that generally marks the end of the Summer. Most businesses close down and everyone goes to the beach, or a BBQ.
For me, it’s not a holiday at all. As I mentioned a while back, I was laid off, along with another person, from a Real World job I’ve held for almost 9 years. I’ve been applying to anything that remotely looks interesting and currently, I’m about about 120 applications, 29 rejections, far to many companies just ghosting me, a couple of video interviews and one that made it to two face to face interviews before I was rejected.
I’ve discovered, since my last stint out of work, that many applications are automatically rejected by AI systems that far to many HR departments have started using. In talking with others, these AI systems have a bad habit of rejecting people who meet almost all the criteria in the job description. I know I’ve run into that myself. When I send in an application and it’s rejected in a matter of hours, I know that it was never reviewed by an actual person.
Another problem I and other people are facing are scammers. The number of scammers has skyrocketed. I’ve seen quite a few trying to con me. Another thing I’m seeing are these off shore call centers calling me about “A job you are perfect for.” These are usually from India, but using a call forwarding system to appear to be from places like Texas or New Jersey.
They are always for short term contracts with a number of them being halfway across the country. Oh yes, you will need to be on site to take the jobs. I delete their email and mark them as spam and block them on my phone, listing them as scams. These people also don’t seem to talk to each other since I will get 5 or 10 calls/emails from the same “Company” about the same job I just rejected.
Finally, another thing everyone looking for a job is complaining about are the fake jobs. These are jobs that are constantly being reposted with hundreds of applications on the job sites. I’ve since learned to not use the job sites, such as LinkedIn, to apply to a job, but go directly to the company’s site and apply through their interface. In a number of cases, I find that the job that is being listed on the job boards, isn’t listed on their site at all.
Well, as you can see, I’m a bit depressed over the whole thing, I remember how I was out of work for 2 years the last time. Hopefully, I’ll find something soon. As for all the rest of you, I hope you all have a great day off.
