Comrade Bernie Sanders would like to repeal the First Amendment

I was going through that internet thingy this morning when I saw an interesting headline: Limiting government limits on our speech.

It’s a column by William R. Maurer in the Washington Times. Apparently, Bernie Sanders, the Senator from Vermont and the only self avowed socialist, has put forth an amendment to the Constitution that would rewrite the First Amendment. Here is what the article had to say:

Sen. Bernard Sanders has proposed an amendment to the Constitution to remove First Amendment protections from individuals who gather together to form corporations.

This is so dangerous on so many levels that its frightening. The reason for Comrade Bernie’s amendment is simple. Recently the Supreme Court realized that the 1st Amendment actually applies to everyone, including corporations. ((See Citizen’s United v FEC)) When this decision came down, it sent the left wing over the cliff in foaming outrage. The goal of Sanders and the other left wing groups is to “Fix” the issue by amending the constitution and stripping the right of free speech away from people and groups they don’t like.

Again, from Mr. Maurer:

New advocacy groups, run by influential media and political figures, are springing up to overturn “corporate personhood” so they cannot participate in elections. Occupy Wall Street chants, “Corporations are not people.” These efforts have one thing in common: They are aimed, in part, at overturning the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. FEC, which they claim holds that corporations have the same free-speech rights as individuals and that money equals speech. They argue that until corporations are deprived of free-speech rights, we won’t have “democracy” in America.

Don’t believe it. This effort, if successful, would gut the First Amendment, give the government the power to shut down speakers it deems too influential, establish the institutional press as a preferred speaker and enable politicians to dictate who speaks and how much they may say. It would not return democracy to the people; it simply would give the government the power to censor those who dare to challenge the political status quo.

This, of course, is the goal of the left in this country, They really do want to institute a totalitarian regime based on the old Soviet Union. In order to do this, the Democrats and other Marxist groups first have to destroy the one thing that makes the United States unique in the world. Our Constitution.

So why do these idiots want to do this, other than institute a one party state and enslave the American people? Again from the Washington Times Article:

Mr. Sanders and campaign-finance “reformers” operate from a serious misconception about both the First Amendment and how the court applied it in Citizens United. The opponents of the Citizens United ruling view the First Amendment as a grant of rights to individual persons. It is not; it is a restriction on the power of government to abridge speech. Citizens United merely recognizes that the First Amendment prevents the government from making it illegal for people to speak collectively through a corporation, a union or some other association.

And here is the heart of the matter. Progressives, Liberals, Marxists and Democrats, (Yes I’m repeating myself), believe that people do not have God given rights, they believe people have privileges granted them by the government and that the government can remove them at will. They have totally missed the point of the United States.

Finally, from Mr. Maurer:

It is no accident that those seeking to gut the First Amendment are the same people calling for more and bigger government. They realize that without the facade of campaign-finance laws, a state that picks economic winners and losers can quickly begin to look like a banana republic. Call it the “Solyndra effect.” But as people are free to join together and speak to voters, efforts to endlessly expand the reach of government into our lives will be more difficult. So don’t fall for their arguments that corporations are not people and their speech must be quashed lest they control our lives. If we lose the First Amendment, we will lose the most important check on the one entity that really can control our lives: government.

Sanders, Obama, Reid, Pelosi and the others have no interest in freedom, other than their own. The only care about one thing. Absolute power. Their contempt for the people and the constitution they SWORE to uphold is manifest in every remark they make and every bill they shove down the American people’s throats.

The only way to stop these people without resorting to the Second Amendment reset button is to be vigilant and make sure these people are removed from office at the next election. If we fail, then we are doomed.

Remember what Benjamin Franklin said at the close of the Constitutional Convention when asked what type of government the Constitution was bringing into existence. Franklin replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.”

We are dangerously close to losing our Republic. What are you going to do about it?
