Or, as the Egyptian Foreign Ministry called, an idiot. Good day all. There was a hijacking of an EgyptAir flight yesterday that had all the trappings of another Islamic terrorist action. However, and happily, this one was a plain, ordinary criminal action by a complete idiot.
The criminal, one Seif Eddin Mustafa, hijacked the airliner and forced it to land in Cyprus. Needless to say, all the security systems went into full overdrive, at least until this moron started making demands. Here are the details from Fox News:
Police arrested a lovestruck “idiot” who wore a fake suicide belt and forced an EgyptAir passenger jet to land in Cyprus Tuesday morning, government officials confirmed, ending a bizarre and frightening hijacking that stretched on for hours.
It couldn’t have been too frightening, the idiot let one of the passengers take a “Selfie” with him. So, what did this cunning criminal mastermind want?
Police said he demanded a meeting with his ex-wife, with whom he has four children. He reportedly gave negotiators the name of a woman who lives in Cyprus and asked to give her an envelope.
At one point the hijacker demanded the release of women held in Egyptian prisons, but he then dropped the demand and made others. “His demands made no sense or were too incoherent to be taken seriously,” Cyprus’ Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides told reporters, adding that the contents of the letter also were incoherent.
I can just imagine the counter terrorist experts trying to figure out what this knothead was up to. I’m sure they quickly came to the conclusion that he wasn’t some Jihadi bent on slaughtering innocent people in fairly short order. At that point, it was just a job for the hostage negotiators to talk Dumb Dumb off the plane and into handcuffs.
“He’s not a terrorist, he’s an idiot,” Egypt’s foreign ministry said in a statement to a Cairo-based journalist quoted by Reuters. “Terrorists are crazy but they aren’t stupid. This guy is.”
And this guy has a long history of being stupid. He is well known to the Egyptian police.
Egypt’s Interior Ministry identified the suspect as 58-year-old Seif Eddin Mustafa. It said he has a long criminal record, with charges including forgery, theft and drug possession. He had also served time in prison, it said.
And now he will be spending even more time in prison. I think 20 years or so? Since this wasn’t a “Political terrorist crime” but rather a straightforward crime, I doubt the Egyptians will string him up. Of course, spending what will probably be the rest of his life in the Egyptian version of a supermax prison won’t be a piece of cake either.
The haphazard hijacking spawned derision from Cypriot and Egyptian officials as it became clear Mustafa was not connected to any terrorist organization.
I’m sure they appreciated the nice change of pace. However, there is still the issue of how this clod got on a plane with a fake bomb.
Lambrianou said Cypriot authorities will ask the help of Interpol to determine how the suspect managed to pass the fake explosives belt through airport security in Egypt.
I don’t know what the procedures used by the Egyptians are when they check for explosives, but I would not be surprised if they used some sort of chemical sniffer. Since a fake bomb won’t have actual explosive chemicals, they wouldn’t necessarily spot anything out of place.
Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, when asked by reporters whether he could confirm that the incident was about a woman, replied, “Always, there is a woman”, drawing laughter.
I hope Mustafa has lots of memories of women, because he won’t be seeing any for a very long time to come. Perhaps I should send him this one so he can tape it to the wall of his cell?
No, I think that would constitute a violation of his rights, not to mention being a crime against humanity.
