Tell me again why teachers unions are important?

Good day all. I noticed this story the other day when I was working on a different blog post. It seems that in Kalifornistan, if a teacher has to go out on a long term leave, (Usually for medical reasons), they have to pay for the substitute teacher from their paycheck.

This story begins with Heather Burns. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to take a medical leave while receiving treatment. She found a massive deduction in her paycheck and learned that she was paying for her temporary replacement. Here are the details from NPR:

A 40-year-old California law requiring public school teachers on extended sick leave to pay for their own substitute teachers is under scrutiny by some state lawmakers after NPR member station KQED reported on the practice.

KQED found that a San Francisco Unified elementary school teacher had to pay the cost of her own substitute — amounting to nearly half of her paycheck — while she underwent extended cancer treatment. Since the story published, more public school teachers have reached out to describe similar hardships.

Unlike many other employees, public school teachers in California don’t pay into the state disability insurance program and can’t draw benefits from it. Under the California Education Code, teachers get 10 sick days a year, after which they receive 100 days of extended sick leave. It’s during this latter period that the cost of a substitute teacher is deducted from their salary.

First, I will go on record that I consider many publik skool teacher to be little more then poorly trained political indoctrination specialists. I will also say that good teachers are never paid enough. I’m also opposed in general to unionizing public school teachers. Now, getting all that out I have just one thing to say. WHERE THE HELL WAS THE UNION IN ALL THIS?????

Eric Heins, president of the California Teachers Association, said fixing the problem could be as simple as eliminating that part of the education code.

“Some of our advocates in Sacramento are talking with both the governor’s office and with [state Sen.] Connie Leyva and others who have expressed interest as this continues to go viral,” he said. “There’s a lot of discussion about it and outrage and … you can say rightfully so.”

Nice enough of you to notice you moron. Where have you been for the last 40 years this has been going on?

But Heins added that scrapping the 1976 law would strain already cash-strapped districts, and he noted that extra state funding would first be necessary. “It’s about money, of course,” he said. “When you’re in an underfunded system you’re still robbing Peter to pay Paul.”

Hey, here’s an idea. How about getting rid of the 243 levels of administrative overhead? You know, all those people who don’t actually teach children, protect children or maintain the school buildings? And that’s just to start with. The Kalifornistan budgets, state, county and local, are so bloated with waste, duplication and sheer incompetence, that you could take care of this problem and still cut the budget by a good 50 percent.

The 1976 education code provision was, at the time, likely considered a benefit to teachers, Protas added, by guaranteeing 100 days of extended sick leave at partial pay, while protecting their jobs.

And back then it probably worked. However, the times have changed as the moonbats flocked into Sacramento and proceeded to turn the Golden State of California into the People’s Democratic Republic of Kalifornistan, where the streets are paved with turds.

Kalifornistan is a lost cause. It’s collapsing and frankly, should be allowed to fail completely. Only then, when have the population has left, and all that remains are the Hollyweird Elites and the illegal aliens trying to kill them, will the state be ready for a change. At least it appears that Ms. Burns treatment was successful and I wish her a long and healthy life, in the private sector.
