Good day all. One of the major issues facing cities controlled by the Progressive Liberal Democrats is a growing homeless population. There are many reasons that a person may be homeless, but a large number are addicts that have hit rock bottom and stayed there, and those who are severely mentally ill.
What to do with them has been a question that the progressives have trouble answering. Their usual answer is “Throw more money at the problem!” usually by building shelters that few of the homeless will actually use. Now someone in Seattle has come up with a cunning plan. Here are the details from Fox News:
A Seattle-area council member is pushing a $1 million proposal that would bus homeless people out of the state as part of a “family reunification” plan.
The plan, proposed by King County Councilman Reagan Dunn, would be a one- or two-year pilot program aimed at helping people who have someone in another state willing to take them in but can’t afford the cost of getting there.
So, in other words, the plan is to “Bus” all the homeless people to their “Families” who all happen to be in San Francisco and Los Angeles?
The city of Seattle and community organizers already offer free bus tickets as part of their broader approach to homelessness but Dunn’s proposal, unveiled Tuesday, focuses on 1,000 homeless people who said they wanted to reconnect with family during a homeless count in King County back in January.
Those sound like people who are in the “Down on their luck” phase and aren’t addicts or mentally ill. Or that’s what they are claiming.
In that survey, 9 percent of respondents said “family reunification” was one piece of support they needed to get off the streets and obtain permanent housing. However, other things like rental assistance, clearing up credit history and obtaining IDs ranked much higher.
Getting an ID is one of the easiest things to do. If someone is former military, his or her prints will be on file and they can be identified in a matter of days at most. Others may have had licenses that can be located in databases or even passports. These sound like people who have other issues but are not druggies or nuts. That accounts for what? 5% at most?
Dunn unveiled his proposal at a time when city and county officials are considering merging services to better combat rising homelessness in a region that has been dominated by tech companies like Amazon and where income inequality and skyrocketing housing prices are pushing more and more people onto the streets.
I suspect one of the reasons housing costs are going up is due to the Progressives running the city trying to “Help” people. The usual end result is utter and complete failure of their plans, but they do feel good for trying! They were even given an award showing they participated.
Dunn, who represents part of the wealthy Seattle suburb of Bellevue and the southeastern corner of Washington’s most populous county, said his pilot program would be better funded and promoted than the city’s piecemeal approach. He said the money would come from reserves.
Sounds like his constituents are annoyed with the riffraff moving into their neighborhoods and told him to do something about it.
“We have the highest homelessness rate per capita because we’re promoting failed policies,” said Dunn, who opposes combining county homelessness services with Seattle. “We don’t need more government to promote Seattle-centric policies.”
What is this guy, a Republican? I have yet to meet a progressive who didn’t think the answer to any problem was less government intrusion.
It’s not clear what strings would be attached to his proposed bus ticket program, which would have to be approved by the County Council.
Oh I can think of a few. First of all, think of all the family members of the city council that need good high paying, low work government jobs. They will also need new office space for the new employees, and oh, they just happen to know someone who has a piece of land that is ready for building. Granted, it’s currently in use with people living in nice homes, but that’s what eminent domain is for.
An investigation by The Guardian in 2017 showed how some cities failed to properly track the people who were sent away or banned them from using public services such as shelters or case managers if they returned after taking a one-way bus or train ticket out of town.
Dunn said he doesn’t want to limit future eligibility for all homelessness services but that restrictions should be considered. He said he would support limits to prevent people from repeatedly getting bus tickets.
And there are his Progressive credentials. Rather then incentivize those that have been shipped out to stay out, keep offering them free stuff. In other words, “If at first you don’t succeed, fail, fail, fail some more.”
Critics say transportation assistance can help a limited number of people facing homelessness but that it’s an imperfect system that could merely reshuffle an already vulnerable population and doesn’t address chronic homelessness.
“That type of program model is one that is pretty obviously not designed to end homelessness. It’s designed to get homeless people out of town,” said Tristia Bauman, senior attorney at the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty.
Of course that’s the plan you idiot. It was always the plan. Thanks to morons like you, who goes home each night to their nice, secure gated community with armed security on hand, the old methods have been ended. Most of those who are homeless are really sick mentally and should be institutionalized. Thanks to people like you, that was ended and all those who were in institutions were released out into the streets.
But, of course, you feel great for protecting their civil rights. Why I see a nice participation plaque up there on your wall! The fact is, until we get serious about dealing with the causes of homelessness, and they are many, busing people out won’t do much for anyone except the locals. We all know what needs to be done, but we won’t do it. (I will, but then I’m rather ruthless)
