Good day all. I’m sitting here watching the Stock market crater because of people panicking over the Coronavirus, aka the Kung Flu. (Yes, a bad joke there. Work with me here)
The Coronavirus hit the news about 6 weeks ago when China started locking things down in Wuhan. However, in the typical manner of the Communist government there, they were to little and to late. Instead of heeding early warnings from doctors, they threw them in jail.
Now I’m not any sort of an expert, and I’m only going by what I’m reading. It seems that once someone is infected, it can be a few days before they start showing symptoms. During that period, they are able to infect others. The virus appears to be airborne, meaning if you breath bad air, you can catch it.
Because the Chinese government was more concerned with losing face rather then dealing with the issue, and that it got started during the Chinese New Year, the flu has gone global. As soon as other governments realized what was happening, they started instituting procedures to minimize the risks of this thing spreading. However, it has spread and is all over the world.
However, there really aren’t that many people who have it, and far fewer who do have died from it. Most of the cases have been in China, which isn’t surprising, since this is where it got started. Outside of China? Maybe 2000 at most. While the Chinese government did screw up by the numbers early on, they are now taking measures to contain the virus and they will stop the spread soon enough. (Advantages of a police state, sadly)
As for the rest of the world, the next two countries with high numbers are South Korea and Japan. (No idea about North Korea since they don’t tell anyone anything, and the entire country is one big containment camp) Both of those countries have less then a thousand cases each, although it’s expected to increase. How many people have died from this illness? To many of course, but from what I’ve been reading, statistically, it’s no worse then any other flu season. This is NOT another case of the Spanish flu that killed millions in the early 20th century.
Most people who catch this are going to be miserable for a couple of weeks, and then they are going to get better and move on with their lives. There is also work being done to create a vaccine. And I’ve read a few stories that there have been some breakthroughs. Still it has to be fully developed and tested before it can go into mass production.
There are also treatments that can help to some extent, such as Tamiflu and HIV treatment drugs. For most people who catch this thing, it will lay them out for a few days and they will recover with no more medical treatment needed then the basics of aspirin/ibuprofen, other symptom relievers and good old fashioned TLC and chicken soup.
This leads us to the morons on Wall Street. Currently, the Dow Jones is off around 1000 points as panic selling kicks in. Most of this is being driven by computers of course. Also, we’re actually due for a bit of a correction and this is as good a time as any to have it and get it out of the way. Besides a probable correction, there is the problem with trade with China. It’s been all but shut down since China is trying to get this thing under control.
They’ve basically been telling people to stay home, going out only for emergencies and getting food and other supplies. When these people go out, they are also being told to avoid contact with others and to take precautions such as wearing masks. Most people are doing this. I expect that the Coronaviris will be fully contained and controlled in China in another month, if that long. What they aren’t doing is working in manufacturing plants.
In the mean time, it’s wait and see on the Stock Markets. We’re now coming up on buy cheap territory. Once the Kung Flu is done, all that cash that was pulled out is going to need to go somewhere, and that means all those stocks in companies that are basically solid. That will probably start in very short order.
The economy is basically sound and under President Trump doing better then it has in decades. Companies that will be hurting are those that shipped all those American jobs overseas and now can’t get products. Well, those that didn’t, or have been pulling manufacturing back into the United States or Mexico, are going to be in great shape and their market share is probably going to go up.
Now, we also have to cover some of the conspiracy theories out there. The biggest one is that the Coronavirus was actually a bioweapon that escaped a lab in China. Honestly, I think that is just a load of horse manure. Is China involved in bioweapons research? Probably. Is this one that “Escaped the lab and started the zombie apocalypse?” Please! Give the Chinese government a little credit. Bioweapons are scary things and if a government is going to break upteen million international agreements to develop them, they are going to make damn sure their processes and procedures are set to keep their little “Bundles of joy” from getting out.
The other thing that tells me that this isn’t a bioweapon is that the death toll is so low. A biological warfare agent is going to do two things, Spread as widely and rapidly as possible, and kill as many people it infects as it can. This thing isn’t doing either. So log off of World News Daily, shut off Alex Jones and check your tin foil hat at the door.
The Coronavirus is going to burn itself out in a months or so, probably sooner. The last time the media went nuts with their endless screeching of “We’re all gonna die!!!” was when SARS showed up. Guess what? No one in America died of SARS. A few did get sick, but they recovered. It was China and other countries with, to be blunt, Socialist medical systems that had the biggest problem. (Here that Democrats? Socialized medicine kills, it doesn’t cure) This is just the media doing another one of their “OHMYGOD, We’re all going to die!! Stay tuned for updates after this commercial for bladder control products.” As you can see, I’m not worried about this at all. *cough* *cough* Achoo!! *sniffle*
