Good day all. When President Trump was elected the first time in 2016. many leftards announced they were quitting the United States. Very few did. When President Trump was returned, even more announced that they were leaving and were going to give up their American citizenship.
In the past, it was very difficult to surrender your citizenship. You had to go to an American consulate or embassy and formally sign an oath that you wanted to stop being an American. There was also a fee that was, until recently, $2350.00 dollars.
Part of that was to cover the costs associated with processing the renunciation, and part of it was to try and make people think about what they were doing. Now the State Department has decided that if you want to go, fine. The United States government has lowered the fee to just $450 dollars. Here are the details from Fox News:
The State Department has cut the fee Americans must pay to renounce their U.S. citizenship by roughly 80%, lowering the cost from $2,350 to $450 under a new rule that took effect Friday. The new fee, first announced in 2023 but not previously implemented, returns the cost to the same level the government charged when it first began requiring payment for citizenship renunciations in 2010.
The State Department said in the rule that it lowered the fee as a policy decision to reduce the cost burden on people seeking a Certificate of Loss of Nationality, the document issued after someone formally renounces U.S. citizenship before a diplomatic or consular officer abroad.
I don’t have any intention of giving up my citizenship, but I am curious on why it costs so much? As far as I’m concerned, if you want to go, then go. Good bye and good riddance and don’t let the door hit you on the ass on your way out. However, there as a reason for the fee.
The State Department raised the fee from $450 to $2,350 in 2015 in part to cover administrative costs as the number of Americans seeking to renounce their citizenship surged following new U.S. tax reporting rules for expatriates, The Associated Press reported.
Hmm, who was president back then? Don’t tell me, I’ll remember.
Now I do have a vague memory of the changes in the tax rules. However, since it didn’t affect me, I didn’t think anything of it. However, it looks like it did affect a large number of people.
Applications to renounce citizenship rose sharply in the early 2010s, climbing from 956 cases in 2010 to 3,436 in 2014, the State Department said.
One of the amusing things that people who gave up their citizenship is that they can’t come back into the United States without a visa. When they do get the visas, they find out that a lot of things they used to be able to do are no longer allowed.

Renouncing U.S. citizenship involves a multistep process that requires applicants to appear before a U.S. consular officer abroad and confirm in writing and verbally that they understand the consequences before taking a formal oath of renunciation, The Associated Press reported. The State Department must then review and approve the request before issuing a Certificate of Loss of Nationality.
The reason for all the hassle is that they want people to consider what they are doing. They are providing many chances for someone to change their minds. They also want to make sure that the person renouncing his or her citizenship has already secured citizenship in another country and fully understands the repercussions. I’ve read stories where some idiots went through the process and then discovered that they were now stateless people because they hadn’t gotten citizenship somewhere else.

Frankly, if someone wants to pull the plug, let them. There are plenty of people who want to come here and eventually become American citizens. There are those who were born here, (Anchor babies), but have spent most or all of their lives outside of the United States. They feel no connection and for them, renouncing their citizenship is no big deal. Cutting the costs for them makes perfect sense.
As for those who want to “Rage quit” the United States because Donald Trump is the president? Now it’s a lot cheaper for them and I encourage them to do so. It’s always amusing when a new president comes in that they like and then they find out that they can’t get a visa and won’t be allowed back in. Perhaps more of the Hollyweird Libtards can be encouraged to actually keep their word and leave America behind. When they find out just how good they actually had it, we can all just look at them, point and laugh.
