Good day all. As you are aware, the United States has been engaged in reducing Iran’s ability to cause trouble in the Middle East for a few months. There have been a lot of pauses, cease fires and some tit for tat engagements. Iran, for it’s part, is claiming they have defeated the United States. You also have a number of Iranian fellow travelers on the left parroting Iran’s claims.
The truth is different of course. Iran’s military infrastructure, at least that belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corpse, has been effectively destroyed. The Strait of Hormuz is firmly in the hands of the United States Navy and they are now escorting shipping in and out of the gulf. Apparently, all the mines Iran laid have been cleared as well.
The latest cease fire ran out a few days ago and people have been wondering when the United States was going to start bombing Iran again. It looks like that the Trump Administration has decided to outright crush Iran’s economy, along with selective strikes inside Iran. Now the civilian leadership is crying uncle and wants to cut a deal. Here are the details from the New York Post:
Iran’s president and parliamentary speaker are both publicly pushing for the country to end the war with the US as they grapple with hardliners who favor resistance. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned that mounting economic pressure on Tehran is taking its toll, while cautioning against “humiliatingly” backing down “before the enemy.”
“The war must come to an end at some point,” Pezeshkian said in a speech Friday, per state media. “It is better that we demonstrate our strength and dignity today and tell the world that we have won and that we are ending the war.”
Iran’s government is not some much split as flat out broken. The IRGC, which is made up of smooth brain fanatics, absolutely won’t quit. They literally do not care how may Iranian’s die. The level of fanaticism is on par with that of Imperial Japan on August 1st, 1945. It took two nuclear weapons being deployed to convince the Emperor that they had lost and it was time to surrender. Even then, many in the Imperial Army were prepared to fight on, even if it meant the annihilation of Japan.
Since the memorandum of understanding collapsed, President Trump has maintained a blockade on Iran, cutting off the regime’s ability to sell oil, which had been its top source of revenue.
The only place Iran can ship their oil is to Russia and they really don’t need it. Russia is also having trouble shipping out it’s own oil. Between sanctions and seizing the Russian “Black” fleet, not to mention the Ukrainians sending drones to blow up the Russian oil infrastructure, selling Iranian oil is going to be almost impossible.
“I was in the presence of the Supreme Leader, and in his speeches as well, he openly stated that we must move beyond this state of ‘neither war nor peace,’” Pezeshkian claimed, per a translation referring to Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who hasn’t been seen publicly since the war in Iran began.
“We are not going to humiliatingly back down before the enemy or bow our heads. We can sit down with strength, but also with logic, and resolve our problems. This is possible, and we are also working to make it happen.”
What the United States wants is simple. An end to Iran’s nuclear program, ending all support for terrorists such as Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis and a few other details. I don’t think the civilian government will mind if this also forces the disbandment of the IRGC and getting rid of the Mad Mullahs that have rivaled some of the worst of the 20th century totalitarian tyrants.
Ironically, Khamenei recently elevated hardliners in Iran who lean towards resuming war over officials who favor trying to cut another deal with the US.
First, there have been no public pictures of Khamenei since the compound where he, his father and a good chunk of the Iranian leadership was leveled by an Israeli airstrike. The reports are, if Khamenei is not dead, he was grievously wounded. It’s anyone’s guess if he’s actually running anything.
But similar to Pezeshkian, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf underscored the national security risks Iran faces if the theocratic regime continues to deal with a full-blown economic crisis.
“No matter how much military power we have, if people are hungry and we do not have financial circulation and economic growth, we will not endure,” Ghalibaf said, per Iranian state media. “As someone who has experienced war, [I] understand the true value of peace.”
And it can get a lot worse. We have not been targeting the civilian infrastructure. That can change very easily, and if it does, all the power stations will be destroyed, water systems wrecked and the transportation system needed to get food and other supplies into the cities cratered. There has been some discussions on if, and when we should escalate to this level. If we do, Iran as a modern country is ended. The cities will very quickly become uninhabitable and people will leave looking for food.
Trump has long made clear that his primary goal is to ensure Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon. But he also wants the Strait of Hormuz to be fully reopened.
“They would love to make a deal, but they’re not ready to make the right deal,” the president told reporters on Friday.
I think things are coming to a head in Iran. This is where you send in the Special Forces to quietly start causing problems for the IRGC and the other smooth brain fanatics. The Iranian people are ready, but they need weapons, training and guidance. I have no knowledge if any of this is happening, but it would be nice if it does. Now all we can do is wait.
