And the shutdown is on!

Good day all. As of this post, it’s October 1st, pumpkin spice is replacing cocaine as the preferred recreational substance, and the Federal Government has run out of money again.

As of 12:00AM Eastern Time October 1st, the United States Government can no longer borrow money. Additionally, a great deal of spending authority has expired. Basically, there is no money to pay federal employees. This will lead to layoffs and Reductions in Force. Here are the details from Fox News:

The federal government is officially entering a partial shutdown on Wednesday after the midnight funding deadline passed with Democrats and Republicans failing to agree on a funding bill.

An earlier attempt by Senate Republicans to pass a short-term extension of fiscal year (FY) 2025 government funding levels, called a continuing resolution (CR), was sunk by Democrats who were furious about being sidelined in shutdown negotiations.

The Democrat’s idea of “Negotiations” amounted to “We want a trillion dollars for illegal aliens and graft!” They have no intention of discussing anything. For them it’s always “My way or the highway!”

House Republicans have been away from Washington in order to pressure the Senate to pass their bill. House Democrats, however, returned this week in a bid to paint a contrast between themselves and the GOP.

In addition to their anger over being sidelined, Democrats had also pushed for a CR to extend Obamacare subsidies that were enhanced during the COVID-19 pandemic but were set to expire at the end of 2025.

Personally, Obamacare needs to die. It was a bad law and destroyed insurance coverage for millions of people. It’s sole purpose was to wreck the private insurance most people have and force everyone into a socialist healthcare system. Recall San Fran Nan Pelosi’s famous comment, “We must pass the bill in order to know what is in the bill.”

President Donald Trump and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) now have wide discretion over what federal services will remain active. However, thousands of government workers are set to be furloughed or made to temporarily work without paychecks, and a litany of federal agencies could be closed.

OMB Director Russ Vought released a memo shortly after the GOP’s CR failed that said because it was “clear” that Senate Democrats would block any more attempts to pass the bill before the deadline, “affected agencies should now execute their plans for an orderly shutdown.”

“It is unclear how long Democrats will maintain their untenable posture, making the duration of the shutdown difficult to predict,” the memo read. “Regardless, employees should report to work for their next regularly scheduled tour of duty to undertake orderly shutdown activities.”

The orderly shutdown activities will basically amount to this.

Some federal workers could lose their jobs permanently as well, with OMB Director Russ Vought issuing guidance earlier this month warning offices to consider plans for mass layoffs in the event of a shutdown.

They could probably get rid of at least 50% of the non-defense personnel and actually see an improvement in how the government does things. I would also suggest that anyone working at the Education Department might want to take the time to update their resumes. That is one department that needs to go away.

Trump told reporters earlier in the day that Republicans did not want a shutdown, but warned the GOP could inflict pain on Democrats should the government close.

“We can do things during the shutdown that are irreversible, that are bad for them and irreversible by them, like cutting vast numbers of people out, cutting things that they like, cutting programs that they like,” Trump said in reference to OMB’s memo.

The CBO estimated, based largely on previous reports from prior shutdowns in 2019 and 2018, that “about 750,000 employees could be furloughed each day; the total daily cost of their compensation would be roughly $400 million.”

Now why would there be a cost? If they have been “furloughed,” then they shouldn’t be getting paid. Oh wait. I forgot. They would get back pay, overtime and other benefits that anyone in the Dreaded Private Sector never sees, Basically, it would be a paid vacation for them. Well, this time, things are different.

The report also noted that given the OMB’s directive of mass firings beyond typical furloughs, the daily cost of a shutdown could decrease.

This is where things are different from all the other shutdowns. The longer it goes on, the more data the Administration gets on what is actually needed and what isn’t. This is what the Democrats have completely failed to understand. They are playing right into President Trump’s hands.

Active-duty service members would also go without pay, while lawmakers are constitutionally required to still be paid.

I’ve been told by former military personnel that this is not accurate. I would need to review the constitution on the part about Congress must be paid. It does explain the headline I saw, (Sorry didn’t read it or have a link), of a member of congress putting forward an amendment to strip members of congress of their pay in circumstance like this.

The Democrats are beginning to see cracks in their unified front. However, their demands to spend a trillion dollars on illegal aliens and other communist ideas is going over like a lead balloon out in flyover country. There is also the problem that Americans have been through all this before and know what a load of manure the claims by the Democrats actually are.

The latest reports indicate that the Democrats will not give up. Senate Majority leader Thune has indicated that he doesn’t see a quick end to the shutdown. President Trump has met with the head of the Office of Management and Budget, Russ Vought to discuss what is going to be considered critical and what is going to be closed down.

Further, layoffs are going to be announced along with permanent Reductions in Force, meaning that a large number of government employees will lose their jobs permanently. This is going to hit the Democrat Party hard since most of the Washington Bureaucrats and their unions work hand in glove with the Democrats. UpChuck Schumer and the rest of the Democrats have dug a nice hole for themselves and their usual tactics are failing. Now the real fun begins due to the Sombrero Shutdown.
