Good day all. Each day, we see just how far the European nations have slipped back into tyranny. They are now jailing people who say things the Governmental elites object to, even going so far as to jail people who just stand silently praying.
One of the people they’ve started hating on is Elon Musk. This is due to his purchase of Twitter, renaming it X and restoring Freedom of Speech on the platform. The original Twitter management was quick to follow instructions from both the EU and the Biden Maladministration to censor or outright ban people from the platform, including President Trump.
When Elon Musk took over TwitterX, he promptly undid all of the censorship and restored access to people that had been booted from the platform for “Wrongthink.” Now the EU wants to steal a billion dollars from Musk. Here are the details from the Daily Fetched:
The European Union is reportedly considering fining Elon Musk’s free speech platform X $1 billion for allegedly violating its law against disinformation and illicit content.
According to The New York Times, which cited “four people with knowledge of the plans,” the E.U. will also demand that X make changes to its product in addition to the fine.
In other words, they want to restore a censorship regime that also would affect Americans.
If the E.U. does move forward, the fine would be the first imposed by the body using its Digital Services Act (DSA), which “regulates online intermediaries and platforms … to prevent illegal and harmful activities online and the spread of disinformation.”
Disinformation and Misinformation are the latest buzzwords. They were originally terms used by the Communists in the Soviet Union and later other Communist countries when they moved to suppress anything that wasn’t what the regimes wanted the general public to know. They ended up in the trash along with the Soviet Union.
However, it started making a reappearance during the Great Panicdemic of 2020 when scientists, researchers and medical professionals started questioning things such as the source of Covid-19. The platforms, lead by Twitter, began suppressing anything that went against the narratives about the origins, potential treatments or questions regarding the vaccines safety and efficacy. Now it’s being used by the hard left, (Communists), once again to suppress anything they don’t want people to know, hence the attack on Musk and TwitterX.
Musk’s social media company responded to the potential enforcement of the E.U.’s social media law, saying the move would be “an unprecedented act of political censorship and an attack on free speech.”
“X has gone above and beyond to comply with the EU’s Digital Services Act, and we will use every option at our disposal to defend our business, keep our users safe, and protect freedom of speech in Europe,” the company said.
There is one small problem with protecting freedom of speech in Europe. It’s been declared illegal. The Daily Fetched story then goes on to list all the crap that the EU is pushing against TwitterX. It’s all bogus of course and is being seen as just an excuse to loot Elon Musk. One of the things they’re complaining about is the Blue check marks people can buy.
“Since anyone can subscribe to obtain such a ‘verified’ status, it negatively affects users’ ability to make free and informed decisions about the authenticity of the accounts and the content they interact with,” the E.U. said.
I have a verified account on TwitterX. I pay about $80/year for it. (I would have to look up the actual costs in the Anger Central ledgers, but the Angry Accountant has locked his office and set the anti-tamper device to prevent me from getting in there.
One of the things that Elon Musk and his TwitterX team have implemented are Community Notes. These allow people to submit either rebuttals to a tweet or affirmation as to it’s accuracy. They’ve proven to be very popular. Basically, Elon Musk’s policy is that the best way to deal with questionable speech is to have more speech. This is called a “Discussion” and historically has been very good with dealing with something that might not be accurate.
However, E.U. regulators stopped investigating X to discuss the potential ramifications of going after a company controlled by one of President Donald Trump’s closest advisers.
There is a reason for this. President Trump and his administration have pretty much had it with the EU. There are serious discussions going on internally on pulling the United States out of NATO. This, along with the ICC trying to arrest Prime Minister Netanyahu are a few reasons that people are wondering if Europe is worth are time any longer.
In recent months, the E.U. came under fire from Vice President JD Vance, who called out the bloc during a speech against censorship in February. Vance sharply rebuked European leaders over censorship, explicitly criticizing the United Kingdom’s crackdown on free speech.
“To many of us on the other side of the Atlantic, it looks more and more like old entrenched interests hiding behind ugly Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation, who simply don’t like the idea that somebody with an alternative viewpoint might express a different opinion or, God forbid, vote a different way, or even worse, win an election,” Vance said at the time.
“If you’re running in fear of your own voters, there is nothing America can do for you,” Vance declared.
“Democracy rests on the sacred principle that the voice of the people matters. There’s no room for firewalls.”
For the last few months we have seen both the EU and the formally Great Britain moving to a totalitarian way of governing. There was even a threat by the Commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police to arrest Americans in the United States to stand trial in England for violating their so called speech laws. As you might have guessed, that went over real well here in the Land of the Free and the home of the Heavily Armed.
I don’t know if the EU is stupid enough to try this. I suspect they are. I also suspect that if they do try this, Musk will not pay and will not comply. I also wouldn’t be at all surprised of President Trump slams the EU and hard, right in the wallets. Frankly, I think it’s time for the Unites States to pull our military out of Europe and tell them that they are on their own.
