Good day all. The People’s Democratic Republic of Kalifornistan is also considered “Car Country” due to the lack of any real public transportation. People practically live in their cars and you will see every type car made out there on the roads. Now some petty tyrannical bureaucrat is threatening to ban them.
The progressive totalitarians running Kalifornistan, (Right into the ground), despise the internal combustion engine, not to mention the freedom it gives people to go where they want, when they want. They have done everything they can to get people out of their cars and onto the joke that is the Kalifornistan public transportation system. Now one of these jumped up bureaucrats has stated that she will order all cars off the road if she sees fit. Here are the details from Bloomberg:
A top California environmental regulator is threatening to enact tough, new pollution rules — including an unprecedented ban on cars burning petroleum-based fuels — in response to a Trump administration plan to relax vehicle emission standards.
California Air Resources Board Chairman Mary Nichols said the state would be forced to pursue “extreme” requirements to offset the uptick in pollution that would be unleashed if federal vehicle emission and fuel economy standards are weakened.
“If we lose the state vehicle standards, we have to fill up the gap with other measures,” Nichols said at a forum on the issue Thursday. “We will be faced with dramatic alternatives in terms of tighter, stricter controls on everything else, including movement of vehicles and potentially looking at things like fees and taxes and bans on certain types of vehicles and products.”
The Kalifornistan bureaucrats have, for decades, pushed to force their ideas on the rest of the country. They are one of the reasons gasoline costs are as high as they are, including diesel fuel. (Diesel is actually cheaper to distill then gasoline and was, for decades, cheaper then regular gas) Auto manufacturers have been forced to build in expensive, and generally unnecessary systems into cars due to Kalifornistan regulators. It was that or set up separate assembly lines, or pull out of the Kalifornistan markets all together. Now the rest of the country is pushing back and the Progressives answer is to punish the peons.
Nichols did not explicitly outline possible changes at Thursday’s event, which was held to discuss the consequences of the Trump proposals and potential California countermeasures. But in remarks prepared for the meeting, she raised the specter of outlawing conventional vehicles with combustion engines, as well as tougher anti-pollution requirements on everything from fuel to the refineries producing it.
“CARB will be exploring ways to ensure communities get the reductions of air pollution they so desperately need to keep the air clean and breathable — and continue to fight climate change,” Nichols said in the drafted remarks, which she did not deliver exactly as prepared. “That might mean, for example, tougher requirements for low-carbon fuels, looking at tighter health-protective regulations on California refineries, doubling down on our enforcement efforts on mobile and stationary sources — and might lead to an outright ban on internal combustion engines.”
Oh I would love to see Kalifornistan ban the use of the internal combustion engine. It would bring their economy to a screeching halt. Of course, none of that matters to the idiots running the state. They have no problem hurting millions of people as long as they get what they want.
The move marks an escalation in the car standards clash between Washington and Sacramento that would increase uncertainty for automakers in their biggest U.S. market. California has already gone to court to challenge the Trump administration’s determination that the vehicle standards are too stringent. In Thursday’s meeting with air quality and transportation agencies, California officials stressed they won’t stop there.
Well, that’s a nice threat to make. Does this mean that Kalifornistan will finally secede from the Union? One can only hope.
The administration in February terminated months of talks between federal regulators and California officials to maintain a common standard. Automakers had urged the two sides to reach an agreement to avert a prolonged legal battle with California, which has unique authority to establish its own emissions rules.
That “Unique Ability” was a construct created when the EPA and the environmental laws were first passed. It basically gave Kalifornistan the ability to impose their standards on the rest of the United States. This has frankly angered other states since it violates their sovereignty under the 10th Amendment and probably the Commerce Clause.
Each state retains its sovereignty, freedom, and independence, and every power, jurisdiction, and right, which is not by this Confederation expressly delegated to the United States, in Congress assembled.
Basically, if Kalifornistan politboro wants to impose their draconian views on itself, it can, provided it doesn’t violate the rights of the people. What they can’t do is impose these same views on other states, or at least that is the intent of the 10th Amendment.
Nichols’ comments show increasing peril for other industries too, particularly oil refineries. California already encourages zero-emission vehicles, and legislation proposed in the state last year would effectively mandate them by 2040.
Why do I get the feeling that certain types of gratuities may have changed hands? While I don’t have a problem with people buying electric cars, I also know that the current technology simply won’t work for most people. Another problem, especially with Kalifornistan, is their desire to shut down power generation plants. They hate coal, oil, natural gas and especially nuclear. Those mandated cars? There will be no way to recharge them.
Critics said California was making a last-ditch effort to revive the Obama vehicle requirements, even as the Trump administration finalizes its changes.
“With the release of the final rule just around the corner, Mary Nichols is ratcheting up her rhetoric in the hopes that the auto companies will put increased pressure on President Trump to back down,” said Tom Pyle, president of the American Energy Alliance, a free-market advocacy group. “He shouldn’t be deterred by it. California is clearly worried about how they will fare in a lawsuit against the Trump administration.”
Nichols said at the meeting California wasn’t “defying the federal government” and signaled she was loath to use “language that’s too colorful.” But “the consequences are dire” and “the alternatives we face are extreme,” she said. “We’re going to keep on fighting but also keep on doing everything we can to be part of a worldwide movement toward cleaner transportation, which is where we need to go.”
Actually she is defying the federal government. She and her followers are also Progressive fanatics. They have no problem imposing their will on others, up to and including killing those who stand in their way. (They will use swat teams when they start going after car owners) Mary Nichols let slip the true desires of the Ruling elite in Kalifornistan.
I really would like to see her announce that as of, oh say, January 1st, 2020, all fossil fuel powered vehicles are hereby forbidden followed by the closing of all gas stations and truck stops. Within a week, the food will run out and the starvation will begin. Then things should get really entertaining.
