FBI investigating Ecuadorian presidential candidate murder

Good day all. Last week one of the candidates for President of Ecuador was assassinated. The Ecuadorian police have arrested a half dozen people in the case. Now, for some reason, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation is heading down there to “Aid in the investigation.”

Most people won’t have heard about the murder. More don’t even know where Ecuador is, or care either. (We Americans are a somewhat isolationist lot and what happens outside the United States isn’t important to us unless it directly affects us) The Ecuadorian government appears to have things well in hand, so people are wondering why the FBI, which has zero jurisdiction, is going down there. Here are the details from Newsmax:

FBI agents were meeting with Ecuadorean police and prosecutors on Sunday as part of a joint effort to uncover who was behind last week’s assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.

Villavicencio, an ex-lawmaker and investigative journalist with a track record of exposing corruption, repeatedly said he was not afraid of the gangs, despite receiving threats.

A brave man, and not to bright. You should always take threats from the cartels seriously and take precautions.

On Sunday, Interior Minister Juan Zapata told reporters the FBI team had met already with police leaders and would in the “next few hours” meet with prosecutors from the attorney general’s office who are leading the investigation into Villavicencio’s slaying.

It’s obvious that this was a “Hit” and that the orders to murder Mr. Villavicencio came from someone else. Still, I don’t see why the FBI is involved. If they had any information, they cold have called down and provided it.

Outgoing President Guillermo Lasso asked for FBI help in the case on Thursday, the day after Villavicencio was shot multiple times as he stepped into a car surrounded by a small group of people that included his own government-provided bodyguards.

That doesn’t say much about his bodyguards. In any case, this doesn’t answer the question as to why the FBI was sent down there. Yes, the current president of Ecuador asked for them, but why? Personally, I think I know why. President Lasso was probably “Asked firmly” to invite the FBI down so they could find “The perpetrator.” I also suspect I know who these agents are reporting to, and who they are going to name as the suspect.

Why not? The maladministration has blamed everything else on the Greatest President of the 21st Century. It’s not like the “Fu**ing Bunch of Incompetents can actually catch real criminals anymore.
